Here is the wrap-up on yesterday's Round of 16 action. Salem 69, Pinkerton 64 — Pinkerton trailed by as many as 13 points before coming back to tie it. Zach Mathieu (14 points) hit back-to-back hoops to tie it at 60 for the Astros but Alex LaRosa (12 points) hit a 3-pointer and delivered a nifty feed to Sean Bergeron for a layup and the Blue Devils prevailed. Salem's Mike Kimball led all scorers with 24 points. Pinkerton's Ben Proulx backed Mathieu with 11 points. Andover 92, Haverhill 65 — Brian Miller pumped in 18 points and Kevin Polanco and Connor Arnold added 15 points apiece for the winners. Dennis Driftmeyer led all scorers with 21 points for the Hillies. Lawrence 84, Pelham 53 — Pelham was no match for Lawrence, which got 25 points from Jorge Escoto, 18 from Justin Nieves and 14 from Jose Berroa. Justin Hojlo pumped in 12 points in defeat. Acton-Boxboro 82, Methuen 76 — In a brilliant performance, Methuen's Eddie Gonzalez erupted for 33 points including seven 3-pointers but A-B pulled it out behind Brett Miller's 27 points. Mike Gorman added 19 points for the Rangers. Dracut 62, Lowell 52 — Thomas McDonald had 20 points for the Middies and Lowell's Steve Wahome scored 13 points. Lynn English 64, Nashua South 61 — Ryan Woumm led the victors with 23 points. Westford defeated Manchester Central but no score was available. Post 9 plays at 4 p.m. today vs. Hudson at Spaulding Regional. Portsmouth is 3-0 while the other three remaining clubs are 2-1. Tyler Pacheco (4 hits) and Steve Clark (3 hits) had big days at the plate with three hits apiece but Derry, which took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, yielded eight runs in the bottom of the frame and could never get back in it. Clark also pitched well in relief of Doug Schultz. ... The Lawrence Thunder beat the Haverhill Black Diamonds 6-1 in the semifinals of the Merrimack Valley Senior Babe Ruth playoffs. Kenny Polanco hurled a three-hitter and whiffed eight. Darren Infante ripped a two-run single, Francis Schaufenbil contributed three hits and two RBIs and Ricky Torres added two hits. Jose Polanco shined behind the plate.
Running Donais, Poretta shine at High Street Bradford's Melissa Donais placed third in 5:08 yesterday at the High Street Mile in Newburyport. Amy Mortimer, who placed fifth in the 1,500 at the recent Olympic Trials, won in a record 4:32, 16 seconds ahead of Claudia Camargo. Alanna Poretta, who will be entering her junior year at Pentucket, placed fifth in 5:10. Kevin Alliette of Methuen, who was the champion in 2004 and 2005, settled for fourth place in the men's race. He ran a 4:14 while five-time Notre Dame All-American Kurt Benninger, 23, won in 4:04. Pentucket's Jason Cox took fifth in the youth boys division in 5:22.
