Twellman, Revs top United

Taylor Twellman scored one goal and assisted on another as New England Revolution ended an MLS drought against D.C. United with a 2-1 win at Gillette Stadium.

New England (11-6-3) beat its Eastern Conference rival for the first time since the 2006 Eastern Conference finals on Oct. 6, 2006, a span of two loss and two ties. D.C. (9-10-1) fell below .500 and finished its three-game road trip 1-2.

Reserve goal keeper Doug Warren allowed one goal but came up with a big save late to help the Revolution regain possession of first place in the Eastern Conference by two points over Columbus.

Pro football: Rams holdout Jackson will end holdout

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract.

Jackson, the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004.

Pro baseball: Griffey ties Sosa on home run list

White Sox slugger Ken Griffey Jr. hit career homer No. 609 against the Mariners, tying Sammy Sosa for fifth on the career list with a two-run shot against his former team. Griffey connected against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in the second inning for his first homer since Chicago acquired him from Cincinnati on July 31.

More pro baseball: MRI shows no ligament damage in Glavine's elbow

Tests show Braves pitcher Tom Glavine has no ligament damage in his left elbow, leaving open the possibility he could return next season.

Glavine was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. As expected, the test showed the 42-year-old Glavine has a partial tear in the flexor tendon in his left elbow.

More pro baseball: Umpires, MLB sign agreement on instant replay

Baseball umpires and management signed an agreement that will allow the sport to start using instant replay to help determine calls on the field.

The deal was signed by lawyers for the commissioner's office and the World Umpires Association one day after a WUA spokesman went public with complaints over negotiations.

College football: New Mexico penalized by NCAA

The NCAA has penalized the University of New Mexico with three years of probation for academic fraud within the football program.

The NCAA infractions committee also imposed scholarship reductions and limited the number of paid visits provided to prospective football players.

The committee concluded that two former Lobo assistants improperly helped one player and three recruits in 2004 to obtain fraudulent academic credits through correspondence courses at Fresno Pacific University.

Auto racing: NASCAR hands out penalties, suspensions to Gibbs

NASCAR suspended two Joe Gibbs Racing crew chiefs indefinitely and stripped drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano of 150 points each for cheating after last weekend's Nationwide Series race. Crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Dave Rogers were fined $50,000 each, and five other crew members were suspended indefinitely, but NASCAR decided not to bar the cars from any future races.
