Opener: Sept. 2 at Winnacunnet

Odds and ends: The Lancers advanced past the quarters for the first time since 2001, highlighted by the shocking upset of unbeaten archrival Pinkerton in the semifinals. ... The loss of Robbie McLarney, who's a freshman at Rutgers, will be tough to make up. ... Midfielder Steve Carroll is a speed burner. He won the 400 at last spring's Meet of Champions.

Coach Shawn Diaz (6th year, 66-21-5): "Our players have come in this season with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence. This is a great opportunity for a lot of new players to get some great experience right from the start. Class L should be very balanced this year."

Odds and ends: Although the unbeaten Astros lost a heartbreaker to archrival Londonderry in the Class L semis, last year was another great season on the heels of two seasons in which they made the Class L finals. ... The regular season title was Pinkerton's first since 1994. ... The Astros gave up just 0.79 goals a game. ... Donald Dane has had a good preseason and talented freshman Antonio Villavincencio has turned some heads already.

Coach Kerry Boles (17th year, 171-92-19): "First and foremost, we need to minimize our injuries. We can't avoid them completely but long-term injuries will have a major impact on our season."

Salem

2007 record: 3-13, didn't qualify for Class L tourney

Assistants: Varsity Steve Goyette, JV Dennis Hajjar, Frosh. Justin Golden

Opener: Sept. 4 at Spaulding, 4 p.m.

Odds and ends: Last year's team didn't have a single senior. ... The three wins was Salem's fewest since the 1999 (3-13) and 2000 seasons (3-11-2). Mike Abi-Aad is back at full strength after a leg injury slowed him last season. ... Brett Miller and Max Gordon are both ready to break out, coach Tony Karibian said. ... At 5-10, goalie Ethan Carr may not be imposing, but his aggresive play will be a boon to the Blue Devils.

Coach Tony Karibian (8th year, 46-52-21): "It's going to be a curious year to see how they jell together. Last year, we didn't make the playoffs. Hell or high water, I think making playoffs is a clear goal for us. (It hinges on) consistent play from everybody."

Timberlane

2007 record: 3-13-1, lost in Class L first round

Assistants: Varsity Corey Laycock, JV Jeff Baumann, Frosh. Ken Sinibaldi

Opener: Sept. 2 at Goffstown, 4 p.m.

Odds and ends: Complete Eagle-Tribune records go through the 1989 season; in that span the three wins last year was the fewest in a season. ... Starting goalie Nick Mascioli is still recovering from a hand injury he suffered during the baseball season. ... Nick Smith is poised for a big year after returning from an ACL injury. ... Co-captain Kevin Zambrano, the youngest of a talented athletic family, is student council president. ... Timberlane grad Corey Laycock, the 2005 Golden Boot champ, will serve as a varsity assistant. He's taking a semester off and plans to transfer from Saint Anselm to a new school in January.

Coach Bill Mealey (3rd year, 8-23-3): "Our goal publicly is to make it to the second round of the playoffs. We all know and have talked about the fact that we need to finish in the top 8 and have a home game. ... (The key) is getting a good start."
