Salem defense dominant in opener

Girls Soccer

Behind a solid defensive effort, Salem opened its season with a 2-0 blanking of Spaulding. Liz Edgerton got the Blue Devils on the board and Courtney Russell added an insurance goal. Cassie Chase and Sarah Raye each picked up assists. Goalkeeper Sarah Snyder stopped the only shot she saw.



Five second-half goals powered Pinkerton past Nashua South 6-2. Stephanie Sayward and Rory Fawcett each netted two goals and freshman Kasey Marraffa potted the first of her career. Nicole Cuerdon added a goal late in the game from 28 yards out.

Boys Soccer

Pinkerton rallies in second half

Pinkerton erased a one-goal second-half deficit by netting two goals in the latter frame, as the Astros snuck past Nashua South 3-2.

Antonio Villaviencio netted the Astros' first of the game in the first half to cut the deficit to 2-1. Mike Wanelik tied the game in the 55th minute before Corey Grant blasted the game-winner at 79:30.

Field Hockey

DiMartino puts away Triton

Behind two goals from Jenelle DiMartino, who was playing in her first varsity game, North Andover cruised past Triton 5-0. Candace Waldie also added a pair of goals, and Krissy Whitley added another. Goaltender Tess McNamara made 13 saves in the shutout.



Pinkerton's defense shined, not allowing Nashua North to get the ball past the 25-yard line in a 7-0 rout. Erin Garrish and Shannon Murphy each potted two goals. Gina Rosinski and Bailey Randell split time in net, but were not even forced to make a save.



Salem erased a one-goal deficit in tying Winnacunnet 2-2. Nicole Rozumek and Chelsie Muldowney were the goal scorers for the Blue Devils, and Jamie Klufts made 11 saves.



North Reading fell to Manchester Essex 4-0. Brianna Angiolillio and Caitlin Reilly stood out in the loss.



Pentucket allowed a goal with 2:12 left in the game and fell to Newburyport 1-0. The Sachems held a five-shot advantage and goalie Kelleigh O'Hearn made five saves for Pentucket. Shannon Brindamour, the Sachems' lone returning starter, stood out in the midfield.



Georgetown's Kelly Burke scored a goal, but the Royals fell to Rockport 2-1. Jessie Denoncour added the assist and Karen O'Hare made six saves for Georgetown.



Londonderry beat Exeter 1-0 in overtime. Kayla Green scored on a breakaway in the extra frame and Emily Baker made 11 saves in the shutout.



Pelham topped Monadnock 4-1. Laura Costa and Keri Foley scored two goals each.

Volleyball

Salem picks up sweep

Salem swept Pinkerton 25-21, 25-16, 29-27. Dan Tiner recorded three straight kills to close out the final game. He finished with 16 kills and three blocks. Jason Kinney was dominant, notching 12 kills and eight blocks.

Pinkerton's Spencer Taylor had five kills and two blocks and Alex Rees tallied 11 blocks.

Golf

Timberlane wins close meet

Timberlane finished with a combined score of 200 to win a quad-meet over Dover (200), Spaulding (204) and Concord (212) at the Cocheco Country Club. Timberlane's Will Valvanis carded a 42 in the eighth spot to pull the Owls to a tie with Dover.

The tiebreaker goes to the team whose sixth, seventh and eighth golfers post the lowest combined score. Junior Alan McCormack had the low round of 37.



Haverhill defeated Methuen 17-3. Ernie Lupi was the day's low scorer (36). He won his match 3 and 2 (36). Jim Murphy won 4 and 2, C.J. Stokham prevailed 3 and 2. For Methuen, Dan Traficante won 3 and 2.
