Senior co-captain Jenna Royal helped lead unbeaten North Andover to the North Shore Ski League regular-season title. You might say Royal helped dethrone Andover, the six-time defending champion.
After playing a couple years of basketball, she was a welcome addition to the ski program. This winter, she was the seventh-leading scorer in the league.
In this week’s Around the Horn, Royal spoke about her impressive skiing background, winning the league title and why you don’t want to click your pen around her.
What did it mean to you for the Knights to be unbeaten league champs? “It’s unbelievable. It’s a special feeling to leave the high school with such a strong mark on the ski team.”
How has the season gone for you personally? “Pretty good. Everybody has their ups and downs. We’re like a family. Everybody has grown every race.”
Why did you leave basketball for skiing? “I tried basketball to try something new. I just missed skiing. We went to Sunday River every weekend. I wanted to get back to a sport I was a lot better at. I was JV in basketball. I had a limited background in basketball.”
What is your skiing background? “I used to race at the Gould Academy ski program at Sunday River. It was a weekend program. I began at about age 10. I went up until 13.”
Why did you stop? “I wanted to try something different. I wanted to be a little rebellious and try something new.”
Are you from a big ski family? “My brothers skied their whole lives and skied in high school. Brandon graduated from North Andover (NA ‘05) and my oldest brother Chris was at St. John’s Prep (SJP ‘03).”
What’s your favorite personal athletic achievement? “I’m most proud of my whole team.”
Do you plan any other sports? “Lacrosse in the spring. I was JV sophomore and junior year.”
Are you looking at any schools? “I’m still waiting to see where I’m accepted. I’d like to get into sports and entertainment marketing.”
Do you work? “Recently I had to stop working. I just had to give it up because I was so busy. I worked at Stachey’s.”
What’s your dream job? “Be a big shot in a sports franchise.”
Who’s your dream date? “Luke Bryan.”
What is your pet peeve? “Clicking of pens. That gets under my skin.”
Do you have a nickname? “J.R.”
Who do you follow on Twitter-Facebook? “Tyler Seguin, Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin.”
Do you have any pets? “A Shih Tzu named Cali. The name fits her perfectly. She’s a diva.”
What is the most embarrassing song you have in your iPod? “‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber.”
If you were named principal, what’s the first thing you’d do? “Nothing. They do a great job.”
