Celtics re-sign backup swingman Daniels

The Boston Celtics have re-signed swingman Marquis Daniels.

The team announced that it had signed the 6-foot-6 Daniels after his disappointing first season with the club. The seven-year veteran missed 28 games with a torn ligament in his left thumb that required surgery and averaged a career-low 5.6 points in 51 games.

In the Celtics' last 25 games, Daniels sat out two, scored two points seven times and was held scoreless six times.

He played in only 11 of the team's 24 playoff games and just two of the seven games for a total of 4 minutes, 21 seconds in the NBA finals won by the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2008-09 he averaged career-highs of 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 54 games with the Indiana Pacers.

Pro baseball: Wigginton penalty now two games, Kershaw stays at five

Baltimore infielder Ty Wigginton has had his suspension cut to two games while Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is set to sit out five games.

Both players originally appealed their penalties from last week.

Wigginton's suspension was reduced from three games after he agreed to drop his appeal.

"I got a phone call saying it could be reduced to two games and would I be willing to do that," Wigginton said. "I said, 'Yeah.' I'm just glad to put the whole thing behind me. The sooner I could get back on the field, the better."

Jake Fox replaced Wigginton at first base and batted eighth in yesterday's game at Toronto.

More pro baseball: Hall of Fame changes voting for veterans

The baseball Hall of Fame has changed the way that managers, umpires, executives and long-retired players will be considered for election.

Candidates will be reviewed in three eras: Pre-Integration (1871-1946), Golden (1947-1972) and Expansion (starting in 1973).

One composite ballot will be considered in each era. The Expansion Era ballot will include 12 candidates, while the Golden and Pre-Integration era ballots each will have 10.

Pro football: No change in Vick's playing status

Michael Vick said that he cried following the shooting after his 30th birthday bash, but not because he had done anything wrong.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback said he cried because he had let people down by putting himself in situation he now knows he should have avoided.

However, through police investigations, probes by the NFL and his team, Vick never doubted he would report to the Eagles' training camp on time.

Yesterday, there he was.

At no point, Vick said, was he formally cleared by the league.

More pro football: Cowboys' Williams says Dez dustup 'not a big deal'

Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams can't even get his 4-year-old son to carry his shoulder pads.

"Man, I can't get anybody to carry them," Williams joked. "I'm mad at him too."

A day after the drama created when first-round pick Dez Bryant refused to carry the veteran's pads off the field after practice, a long-standing rookie ritual, Williams said it was "not a big deal" and that the teammates were fine with each other.

Bryant didn't comment while jogging off the field with cameramen and reporters following him.

There are some who believe Bryant could challenge Williams for the starting job opposite Pro Bowl receiver Miles Austin. The rookie has been impressive in all four sessions so far, and during some post-practice drills dunked the ball over the goalpost after catching a pass in the end zone.

More pro football: Titans sue Lane, USC for poaching assistant

The Tennessee Titans are suing Southern California and coach Lane Kiffin for "maliciously" luring away assistant running backs coach Kennedy Pola a week before training camp opens.

Tennessee Football Inc., the company that owns the Titans, filed the lawsuit in Davidson County Chancery Court against both the university and Kiffin.

The lawsuit accuses Southern California and Kiffin of violating Pola's contract that required him to have written permission to discuss a job with anyone other than the Titans.

Tennessee hired Pola as running backs coach in February only to lose him Saturday to Southern California as the Trojans' new offensive coordinator and running backs coach.

More pro football: Leiweke leaving Seahawks to join NHL ownership

Tod Leiweke resigned as CEO of Paul Allen's Vulcan Sports and Entertainment, leaving the arm that oversees ownership of the Seattle Seahawks, Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Sounders FC just days before the Seahawks begin training camp.

Leiweke is leaving the Pacific Northwest after seven years, jumping at the opportunity to become a part-owner and oversee the daily operations of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning. For the 50-year-old executive, the chance to return to hockey and have a stake in the franchise outweighed his current position overseeing three organizations under one umbrella.

More pro football: Bengals owner wants to sign Owens

Bengals owner Mike Brown is trying to produce his own reality show.

Terrell Owens. Chad Ochocinco. Together in Cincinnati.

Brown said that the team has discussed a contract with Owens and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The Bengals passed on the chance to sign the 36-year-old receiver after a tryout in March, but have given it more thought now that he remains a free agent.

If Owens accepts the offer, the Bengals would lead the league in reality show stars. Receiver Chad Ochocinco appeared on "Dancing With the Stars" in the offseason, and has a dating show called "Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch" currently playing on VH1. Right after Ochocinco's show comes "The T.O. Show."

Pro hockey: Hurricanes GM says no news on search for minority partner

The Carolina Hurricanes say there aren't any updates in their search for a new minority partner. General manager Jim Rutherford said there's no news on the plan of owner Peter Karmanos Jr. to find a new minority investor in the team.

Karmanos had said in May that he hired an investment bank to help him find a new minority investor. General partner Thomas Thewes died in 2008.

College football: Ex-star Clarett back in class at Ohio State

Ohio State University says former football star Maurice Clarett has been granted re-entry to pursue his degree after he spent more than three years in prison.

Ohio State spokesman Jim Lynch says in a statement that Clarett started classes after he was readmitted by the College of Education and Human Ecology, where he was originally enrolled.

Clarett says in a statement that it is a "surreal feeling to be back at Ohio State" and that he doesn't want to be a "distraction or nuisance" to the football team or other students.

College basketball: Trial starts in alleged extortion of Kentucky coach

A Kentucky woman lied repeatedly in an attempt to extort millions from the University of Louisville's basketball coach, then traded sexual favors and lied again to cover up her crime, federal prosecutors said at the start of her trial.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Kuhn told jurors that Karen Cunagin Sypher threatened to ruin Rick Pitino's reputation with false allegations of rape and forced abortion.

"I submit to you that you will not believe a word she has to say about anything," Kuhn said.

Sypher, 50, has pleaded not guilty to extortion, retaliating against a witness and lying to the FBI. She is accused of demanding college tuition for her children, her house to be paid off and $10 million.

A jury of eight men and eight women were selected to hear the case. Four jurors will be excused as alternates before deliberations begin.

Sypher's attorney, James Earhart, told jurors Pitino pulled strings and used his influence to cover up his sexual assault of Sypher and others had their own motives for manipulating his client.

"What this case is about is power, money and influence," Earhart said. "It's about what happens when you are raped by a person with power, influence and money and you have to be destroyed."

The prosecutor walked jurors through the relationship between Sypher and Pitino, which began with a sexual encounter at an Italian restaurant in Louisville in 2003. Sypher later told Pitino she was pregnant, planned to have an abortion but did not have medical insurance. He told police he gave her $3,000, which his attorney said was for insurance, not an abortion.

Six years later, Kuhn said, Sypher approached a longtime friend, Lester Goetzinger, and traded sexual favors for his making phone calls in February 2009 to Pitino threatening to tell the public that the coach raped Sypher in 2003. Kuhn played part of one call for jurors.

The Kansas City Wizards say they sold 700 season tickets after their exhibition win over Manchester United.

Team spokesman Rob Thomson said the new tickets were sold as the team opened the first 2,011 season tickets for next year to sales following the victory over the Red Devils.
