Methuen Jr. Legion tops Cohasset, wins state title

Josh Martinez, Jack McAdam and Matt Soucy each clock big home runs

---- — Methuen Jr. Legion won the state championship last night.

The locals defeated Cohasset, 11-3, to take the title in North Attleboro and advance to the New England Regional Championships (Aug. 9-11) in South Windsor, Conn.

Methuen lost 11-9 to Cohasset on Tuesday night, forcing the winner-take-all game last night.

Cohasset jumped to a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning when the Methuen bats took control of the game and the tournament.

Methuen’s Josh Martinez clocked his third home run of the playoffs, a three-run homer, to tie the score. And it only took one more batter for Methuen too take the lead for good when Jack McAdam followed that up with a solo homer for a 4-3 lead. Before the inning was done, Methuen led 6-3.

But they weren’t done. In the seventh inning Matt Soucy blasted a grand slam, his first homerun of the series, to finish off Cohasset for good.

Billy Hanneffant was the starter going 3 1/3 innings while Jonathan Pierce got the win in relief, not allowing a run and striking out the game’s last batter to clinch the state title and a celebration ensued.

“This team is so much fun to coach,” said manager Chris Cyr. “We needed this performance and we got it. It’s typical of this team. If they fall behind, no problem. They always pick each other up. I’ve been coaching a long time and this is as much fun as I’ve ever had.”
