So long 1,530 wins
North Andover is losing an amazing amount of coaching talent with the departure of boys soccer coach Bill Tarbox (22 years at NA, 301-93-56; 423-206-87 overall), girls soccer coach Bud McCarthy (26 years, 358-100-58), boys basketball coach Mike McVeigh (31 years, 497-176), girls basketball coach Sue Breen (14 years, 205-100; 279-134 overall) and girls lacrosse coach Karen Lahey (11 years, 169-56-3).
That’s 1,530 wins with the Scarlet and Black, 1,726 overall wins and the two winningest area coaches in the history of their respective sports in McVeigh and Tarbox.
I’m not one to automatically praise coaching hirings. Frankly, at times I’m incredulous.
But hats off to North Andover AD Jon Longley for an impressive group of young and hungry new coaches: Lisa Rasanen (girls soccer), Kyle Wood (boys soccer), Paul Tanglis (boys basketball) and Megan Pinksten (girls basketball).
The only weakness is a lack of head coaching experience.
If you see Eagle-Tribune basketball MVP Tyler Nelson on Friday, wish the Central Catholic sharpshooter from Bradford a happy 18th birthday.
It was classy of NFL Hall of Famers Bill Parcells and Warren Sapp to give high praise to their ex-wives during their induction speeches. Being the wife of an athlete or coach is a thankless job.
I still can’t believe there were a whopping 841 credentialed media for the NFL draft combine.
BetchA didn’t know
Area track legend Duane Carlisle and music icon Rob Cummings (aka Rob Zombie) were in the same home room at Haverhill High back in the early ‘80s.
Carlisle is used to being surrounded by greatness. The Purdue strength and conditioning coach’s son Amir is a running back at Notre Dame and his other son, Nai, a muscular 6-foot point guard entering his sophomore year at West Lafayette (Ind.) High, recently received a basketball scholarship from St. Louis.
Not that Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly shouldn’t be proud of being a two-year captain at Assumption College, but it was only club football at the time.
I get a kick out of Atlanta Braves second baseman Nick Pastornicky’s nickname. He’s The Rev.
ESPN’s Bill Polian smugly explains that when he was GM of the Colts they had Aaron Hernandez off their board for character reasons. How hypocritical. When he was with Carolina, Polian drafted in the first round Rae Carruth, who later masterminded the murder of his former girlfriend, resulting in their baby being severely handicapped.
LSU defensive tackle J.R. Ferguson, like his father, is called Ego by one and all. Ego Ferguson, now that’s a fitting name for the modern athlete.
sign of the apocalypse
Ran across a Bishop Guertin press release from a couple years back announcing its softball third basewoman signing a scholarship. Maybe there was a mandate (er, persondate) to make the change from third baseman.
