WHAT A CAREER!

Olivia Bogaczyk, who was The Eagle-Tribune gymnastics MVP in 2010 and 2011, no longer has the strength in her ankle to dismount and tumble and therefore, she needs more surgeries and her career is over, she learned this week.

What a career it was, though, for the Pinkerton senior.

A level 10 gymnast, she overcame a back injury, torn meniscus and several ankle sprains over her career to win individual state titles on the bars her freshman through junior years. She placed third at New Englands in the all-around (37.575) last year and helped the Astros win three straight titles.

Bogaczyk said she received a full academic scholarship to UNH and still is waiting to hear back from Brown, Penn and Stanford.

It certainly sounds like she is headed for a successful future.

LEAVITT THROWS GEM

North Andover grad and current Southern Maine pitcher Tyler Leavitt hurled 5.0 scoreless and hitless innings while striking out five batters to earn a win over Scranton yesterday.

Southern Maine won 13-3.

The nasty southpaw was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star last year when he went 7-0 with a 1.56 ERA and 113 strikeouts for North Andover High and finished a brilliant career at 17-0.

CONCUSSION BILL DENIED

Here is an interesting Associated Press story coming out of Champaign, Ill.

A bill that would have required high school football teams to limit tackling in practices to one day a week didn’t make it through the Illinois General Assembly. But its sponsor hopes the state’s prep sports governing body adopts the measure aimed at concussion prevention.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Carol Sente, failed to make it out of committee. But the Vernon Hills Democrat now says she hopes the Illinois High School Association will adopt her ideas. The measure also would have required football coaches to complete concussion-prevention training.
