‘The Rat’ leads Andover

It’s safe to say the nickname,“The Rat” sounds more like a criticism than it does a term of endearment. But for Meagan Keefe and the Andover field hockey team, it’s all out of love.

Keefe, known as The Rat to her teammates and coaches, has scored 55 goals in her three years as a varsity starter, leading the Golden Warriors to back-to-back Division 1 state titles and a 9-2-1 record so far this year.

And how did she get the nickname The Rat? She’s so good at picking up the trash (aka loose balls) in front of the net.

Peabody coach out

Reports hit this week that Peabody football coach Scott Wlasuk resigned Tuesday after his team started the season 0-5.

It has been a difficult road for Peabody this season, being outscored 224-41 in those five losses. That is a long fall for the Tanners, 17-31 in Wlasuk’s time at the helm, who were once one of the state’s greatest powerhouses.

The name most associated with Peabody’s glory days is late legendary head coach Arthur Adamopoulos, the father of Central Catholic coach Chuck Adamopoulos. Under “Coach A,” the Tanners went 129-60-7, including an amazing 58 shutout victories, from 1961-81. Wlasuk played for Adamopoulos during his high school career for Peabody.

The next great Bol

The son of former NBA favorite Manute Bol — aka the tallest man in NBA history — seems to be following in the family tradition.

His son Bol Bol (yes, that’s his name), is 6-foot-5 as a seventh grader! A spitting image of his father, Bol was recently spotted at a basketball camp in Indianapolis.

It should be no surprise the young Bol is one tall guy. Not only was his dad 7-foot-7, but Manute claimed his mother was 6-foot-10, his dad and sister were 6-foot-8 and his great grandfather was 7-foot-10. But there is no telling if the Sudan native was telling the truth.

Manute Bol passed away in 2010 from kidney disease.

Loiseau on tap?

Could former Merrimack College star Shawn Loiseau be getting a call from the Houston Texans this week?

On Monday, the Texans lost Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Cushing for the season with a torn ACL. So a call to Loiseau would seem a very logical next step.

Loiseau had an impressive training camp with the Texans, finishing second on the team in tackles in the preseason with 12.

Kreider to AHL

While many NHL players head overseas to play due to the league’s lockout, former Phillips Academy star Chris Kreider is calling New England his home once again.

With the NHL season on indefinite hiatus, the New York Rangers forward will play for the squad’s AHL team, the Connecticut Whale. He already showed his dazzling abilities with a hat trick in a preseason game against Worcester.

Last year, Kreider, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound foward, led Boston College to a national title and then joined the Rangers for the playoffs and scored five postseason goals.
