Pinkerton field hockey earns top seed

Pinkerton, Timberlane also in contention for crown

Top-seed Merrimack and No. 2 Salem, both with 17-1 records, could be headed for a rematch after nearly two months of competition in the Division 1 state tournament, which opens at 6 p.m. tomorrow with eight games.

That would make the Blue Devils mighty happy. They would love some revenge after opening the season at Merrimack by getting swept in three games. Since then, under new coach John Roemer, they have won 17 straight games. Merrimack’s only loss was to No. 7 seed Bishop Guertin.

Anxious to spoil the chance at redemption are No. 5 Pinkerton, which is led by Player of the Year nominee Brenna McNally, and No. 6 Timberlane, both of which sport 13-5 records. Timberlane is led by Cassidy Cefalo, Mikki Taffe and junior Christina Nye.

Quarterfinals will be held Saturday at the site of the highest seed while the semifinals (Oct. 31) and finals (Nov. 3) will be held at Pinkerton Academy.

In Division 2, Windham is the No. 4 seed and will open Thursday at home against Souhegan. St. Thomas (16-0) is the top seed and a big favorite to win it all, followed by No. 2 seed Gilford.

Pelham is seeded 15th and will open at Gilford.
