Pinkerton Academy senior Zach Sanford will head to Boston College and skate with the Eagles in the fall.
Yesterday, the Washington Capitals gave Sanford a reason to excel at the next level, selecting the 2012 Eagle-Tribune Hockey MVP in the second round of the NHL Draft yesterday.
An all-state volleyballer for the Astros this spring, Sanford spent the winter on the ice playing for the Islanders of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. A 6-foot-3 left wing, Sanford scored 12 goals with 24 assists for the Isles this winter.
North Reading’s Ryan Fitzgerald, who won back to back state titles with Malden Catholic and most recently skated for the Valley Jr. Warriors, was selected in the fourth round, 120th overall, by the Boston Bruins.
Fitzgerald scored 14 goals with 16 assists in 26 games for the Warriors this winter. He also skated for the U18 Team USA team. His dad, Tom, played 18 pro seasons for seven NHL teams, including the Bruins.
Fitzgerald is committed to Boston College, too.
In the sixth round at 174 overall, Washington selected St. John’s Prep center Brian Pinho of North Andover. Pinho, who will play his collegiate hockey at Providence, netted 15 goals with 27 assists for the Prep, which ranged deep into the Super 8 before being eliminated this winter.
