---- — NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Defending champion Le Moyne blanked Merrimack 8-0 in their Northeast-10 playoff opener at The Ballpark.
Falling to 27-18 on the year, Merrimack will play Bentley in a do-or-die elimination game today at 10 a.m. at Vieira Field. Le Moyne improved to 25-22.
Kevin Carroll threw a five-hitter yesterday to best Tim Cashman (5 runs, 4 earned, 4 innings).
Freshman Frank Crinella was the lone Warrior with two hits while Sean O’Neill, Mike Forgione and Pat Florence each had one.
NECC in playoffs today
The second-seeded Northern Essex baseball team will face Bunker Hill today at 3 p.m. in the first round of the double-elimination National Junior College Region XXI playoffs. Game time is 3 p.m. at Edgar’s Field in Brockton.
Second-round games will be in Brockton Saturday at 11 a.m.
The other two qualifiers are Massasoit and Holyoke.
Framingham State sophomore shortstop Cam Couillard of North Andover made the MASCAC honor roll. He batted .500 for the week (7 of 14) including two hits and three runs scored in 9-3 second round playoff victory over Westfield State.
Fordham sophomore Melissa Higgins of Windham was third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.09) at the Met championships and the former Salem High great ran on the fifth-place 4x800 (9:01.47) and 4x100 (49.81) relays at the A-10 Championships.
