Sports in a Minute: It wasn't all bad for Boeheim

FITTING TRIBUTE

A huge number of mourners showed up at legendary Andover coach Dick Collins’ wake yesterday at the Conte Funeral Home in Andover. The spiral staircaise was lined with his old coaching jackets and there were so many great photos. It was about much more than 220 football wins, 400-plus track wins and scores of championships.

I overheard several say, “He was a second father to me.”

BOEHEIM BUNCH

Last week wasn’t all bad for Jim Boeheim. His 25-0 Syracuse team was shocked by struggling BC Wednesday at the Carrier Dome, but the night before was a good one. His son, sophomore Jim Jr., and his daughter, promising 5-10 8th grader Jamie, were called up to the Jamesville-Dewitt High varsity for the playoffs and scored their first varsity points. Dad was at the game.

Jamie also has a twin brother Jack.

HEALTHY EGO

With kids named Jim Jr. and Jamie, it’s safe to say Jim Boeheim isn’t lacking in the ego department.

ALL-STATE BANQUET

New UMass coach Mark Whipple will be the guest speaker at the Super 26 All-State football dinner on March 2 at Lantana’s in Randolph. Central Catholic’s D’Andrea Drummond-Mayrie made the team. Tickets are $60. For more information call 781-929-3650.

RUSSELL SLAM DUNK

At age 80, Celtic legend Bill Russell is no shrinking violet. LeBron James said he intends to knock somebody off the basketball Mt. Rushmore of Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson andMagic Johnson.

To which Russell responded to Craig Sager, “... I won back-to-back state championships in high school, back-to-back NCAA championships, I won an NBA championship my first year in the league, an NBA championship my last year, and nine in between. And that, Mr. James, is etched in stone.”

HOCKEY FAMILY

Senior defenseman Brice O’Connor of Londonderry is UMaine’s lone captain (there are two assistant captains). He comes from good stock. His brother, Ian, was a co-captain at Providence three years ago and their father, Billerica native Bob, was BC’s MVP in 1981.

HUSKY FAVORITE

UConn junior Pat Lenehan earned one of the biggest ovations of the season when he scored his first career basket against Southern Florida. Check YouTube.com for the reaction on the UConn bench. He’s not a hoop star but he may outearn his teammates. The walk-on has a 4.0 GPA as a molecular and cell biology major.
