Agboola beats BC
Many Division 1 colleges opened up Friday with some impressive local performances.
BU junior tri-captain Rashidat Agboola of Methuen came up big with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks in a 52-46 win over BC. BC junior Katie Zenevitch from Methuen and Central Catholic scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. BC starting freshman guard Danielle Boudreau of Andover scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals.
Wright State freshman starting guard Joe Bramanti of Andover always loves beating Central! He scored two points with two assists and a game-high four steals in a 78-56 win over Central State of Ohio.
Freshman Georges Niang of Methuen had a near-perfect debut in Iowa State’s 82-59 romp over Southern. Niang came off the bench to pump in 15 points and grab 12 boards.
Remembering his roots
Matt Bonner would be hands down the greatest basketball player ever from New Hampshire even if he didn’t make the NBA. I love that the 9-year NBA vet from Concord still does a column with the Union Leader and a local radio show.
He said in the Union Leader, “This is for everyone along the way who has helped out and shown support: coaches, teachers, people in the stands.”
man from mars Hill
Mars Hill (N.C.) College freshman Nick Caruso of Lawrence shot a 73-76—149 to win the four-team Montreat College Men’s Fall Invitational. He coolly drained a par saving putt on the 35th hole to secure the win.
Cakes are baking
UTL birthday wishes go out to St. Anselm volleyball coach Karen Harrington of Windham (turns 29 today), Pinkerton gymnastics standout Brittany Capozzi (turns 16 today), ex-Miami Dolphin fullback Rob Konrad of North Andover (turns 36 tomorrow), Le Moyne lacrosse player Nathaniel Vazquez of Haverhill (turns 19 tomorrow), ex-Pinkerton flamethrower Jay “The K” Yennaco (turns 37 Saturday) and UMass Dartmouth pitcher Aaron Brunette of North Andover (turns 22 Saturday).
Historic deja vu
Salah Baladi and Louis Warner scored to give Methuen boys soccer a 2-0 opening round tourney win over unbeaten Chelsea. It was the Rangers’ first tourney win since 2001. Ironically, that was over another unbeaten team, Cambridge Rindge and Latin.
same old laSpada
Billerica’s Nick LaSpada, who is arguably the greatest QB in MVC history, is playing wide receiver as a postgrad at Taft. He caught the winning TD pass in a 41-36 win over Kent then sealed the win with a late interception.
Kansas State’s record-setting quarterback Collin Klein’s marriage story is a bizarre one. Klein, 23, said he was told by the Lord to marry K-State women’s basketball player Shalin Spani, daughter of ex-KSU and NFL linebacker Gary Spani.
According to Klein, Shalin heard a voice in her head to marry him. The story goes, they got married before even sharing a kiss, which Klein promised himself he’d do as a 14-year-old.
It’s not easy getting top American players to Orono, Maine. Both UMaine basketball teams are relying heavily on foreign talent. There are only five Americans on the 14-player men’s team and eight on the 14-player women’s team.
