Final Score

Short-handed winner

Less than a minute after Concord tied the game on a 5-on-3 power play, Kyle Svenson scored on a short-handed breakaway with just 1:38 to play to lift Salem to a season-opening 2-1 victory.

Impressive triple double

With several scouts in attendance, junior Samnell Vonleh had 16 points, 16 rebounds and 12 blocked shots as Whittier’s girls clipped a good Somerville team, 71-62. Andrea Terranova had 18 points for the Wildcats (2-0) and Michaela Martin scored 13 points and played superb defense on Somerville’s best scorer.

Decisive relay

Methuen’s 4x400 relay came in first to clinch the win as the Rangers defeated Lawrence 45-41 in boys track. David Ospina (600) and John St. Hilaire (1,000) were individual winners and ran on the relay.

Strong in defeat

Greater Lawrence junior Maikel Guerrero had the best game of his career, according to coach Dan Habib, with 15 points and a strong game on the boards, but the Reggies fell to Chelsea 59-47.

Grand Putnam

Lexi Sawyer had 19 points, Clairee Putnam 18 and Briana Angelini 14 as Windham topped Hollis-Brookline 61-50. Putnam became the first Jaguar boy or girl in the 1,000-point club and now has 1,003 points.

Fast start

New coach Nick Collopy got the win in his debut as Methuen opened up with a 60-26 win over Lawrence. The Rangers were led by Maggie Kwakye (shot put), Eladia Cespedes (high jump) and Lauren McAndrew (600).

Astro deadlock

Ethan Landry scored with 24 seconds left to give Pinkerton a 2-1 lead but Manchester Memorial pulled its goalie and scored with four seconds left to tie the Astros again, 2-2. Ryan Christie had a goal and an assist for Pinkerton.

Silk is smooth

Conor Silk scored two goals and assisted on another as Andover beat St. Peter Marian 5-0.

Settles for tie

Central Catholic outshot Acton-Boxboro 41-16 but had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Christian Thompson scored for the Raiders.
