Florida transfers highlight Boston College recruiting

BOSTON (AP) — A pair of transfers from one of Boston College coach Steve Addazio’s career stops highlighted the Eagles’ 30-player recruiting class on signing day yesterday.

Quarterback Tyler Murphy and offensive lineman Ian Silberman both transferred to BC from Florida and are eligible to play as fifth-year seniors.

Murphy started six games for the Gators in 2013 and threw for 1,126 yards with six touchdowns.

Silberman played in 20, starting seven.

Addazio was a coordinator at Florida, before leaving for the top job at Temple.

Silberman, 6-foot-5, 303 pounds, is expected to play left tackle as the Eagles look to rely on an offensive line that helped Andre Williams become a Heisman Trophy finalist last fall.

Addazio worked at Florida from 2005-2010, the last as associate head coach. He was the Owls’ head coach for two seasons.

The Eagles went 7-6 in their first season under Addazio.

A big concern in recruiting has been finding a replacement for Williams. Addazio hopes he found that player in Jonathan Hillman, a 6-1, 202-pound running back from Jersey City who decommitted from Rutgers to sign with BC.

Another freshman who is highly regarded, but may be red-shirted next fall, is Natick’s Troy Flutie, the record-setting son of Darren Flutie and nephew of Doug Flutie. In his career, he rushed for 3,579 yards and 33 touchdowns and passed for 9,014 yards and 112 TDs.

BC recruits at glance

National rankings: (Rivals 42; Scout 61).

Best in class: Connor Strachan, lb, Needham, Mass.

Best of the rest: Jonathan Hilliman, rb, Jersey City, N.J.; Harold Landry, de, Fayetteville, N.C.; Mike Knoll, k, Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

Late additions: Nat Dixon, wr, Lynn Haven, Fla.; Noa Merritt, dl, Sparta, N.J.; Oseh-Lie Saine, dl, Lincoln, R.I.

One that got away: Defensive back Tre Tarpley from Pittsburgh, Pa., flipped his commitment from BC to Vanderbilt over the weekend.

Coach’s comment: “This is our class. Last year we were able to bring in a couple of guys,” BC second-year coach Steve Addazio said. “This is a class that we put a full year in to and we know them very well. Anytime you sign 30, that’s a large number. There can be some misses, but we feel great about this class.”
