STONEHAM — Central Catholic ice hockey coach Mike Jankowski likes to talk about his team’s depth, but yesterday his line of seniors and captains — Corey Webber, Alex Lester and Lloyd Hayes — stood apart in the Raiders’ biggest game of the season to date. Webber scored two goals and had a pair of assists, Lester scored a goal and Hayes had a goal and two assists as the Raiders clipped preseason No. 1 Austin Prep in impressive fashion, 4-1.
Central, now 4-0-1 and ranked No. 4 in the preseason state poll, scored twice in the first period and never trailed, scoring single goals in the second and third period. Conrad Jepson chipped in with two assists and Colin Soucy was solid in goal with 23 saves.
“We have different guys scoring for us every game, but that line was definitely hot today,” said Jankowski. “And Colin made some big saves for us.”
No save was bigger than in the first period when, nursing a 2-0 lead, Soucy stopped a power-play breakaway.
“It was a nice win for us,” said Jankowski. “We haven’t always had a lot of luck against them, but we played well today.”
The Raiders can’t enjoy their big win for long, however. They face another tough opponent Saturday when they square off against St. John’s Prep in Wilmington.
