Northern Essex avenges setback

HAVERHILL — The Northern Essex Community College men’s basketball team avenged an early season loss yesterday by defeating UConn-Avery Point, 69-64.

Despite missing two starters with academic problems, the Knights stormed back from a 30-24 halftime deficit to improve to 7-7.

Haverhill’s Ryan Grant had a huge game for the Knights with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals to lead the way. Colin Collins chipped in with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals and Londonderry’s Chris Corey stepped up defensively with nine rebounds, holding Avery Point 6-foot-6 Malcolm Simmons down.

“He did a great job filling in for Javonte Forbes,” said NECC coach Darren Stratton. “That really helped us.”

The Knights are back in action Tuesday at home against Roxbury.
