---- — METHUEN — The Amesbury softball team may now have an edge in the Methuen Tournament, which got underway last night at the Burnham Road fields.
Not only did the perennially strong Indians (18-1) look impressive while routing Andover 14-1 in the opening game, but they’ll have two days of rest before playing the championship game.
The second game between host Methuen and Whittier was postponed by rain after one inning and will be restarted at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The championship game is now set for 4 p.m. Monday following a 2 p.m. consolation matchup.
Amesbury has been led offensively much of the year by catcher Cassandra Schultz and shortstop Amanda Schell and yesterday Schultz came up big. She was 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Cleanup batter Ashley Valme chipped in with two hits and three RBIs, two coming on a two-run homer in the five-run fourth inning, and Erin Leary was 3 for 4.
By scoring three runs in the fifth, the game was halted by the 12-run mercy rule.
Andover (5-14) struggled defensively, but the Warriors did make good contact off Carolina Merrill. The Warriors had eight hits and only struck out twice. Paige Hartnett and Meaghan Leary were both 2 for 3 with Leary knocking home Hartnett with Andover’s lone run in the third.
In the nightcap, which started in light rain which steadily got worse, Whittier struck first when its first four batters reached base. Leadoff batter Destiny Jordan had a solid single, Kayla Riley reached on a bunt single and they eventually scored on a Dominique Ortiz infield hit and a bases-loaded walk to Nina Moszka.
A third run was thwarted when Cassey Glode was thrown out on a close play at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch. Methuen countered with two runs in the bottom of the first when Amanda Conway (single) and Kat LeFebre (reached on error) scored on wild pitches.
The 2-2 deadlock will be resumed in the second inning tomorrow.
