SUCCESS ON SLOPES
Northeastern University junior Nick Sherman of Andover has been a key contributor for the Huskies skiing squad that has advanced to the USCSA 2014 National Championships, which will be held in Lake Placid, N.Y., from March 9-15.
According to the team’s website, Northeastern is the first Thompson Division team to make Nationals in 15 years.
Former North Andover hockey captain and Eagle-Tribune All-Star Jack Hyman recently wrapped up a stellar season for the Loyola Marymount club hockey team. The senior scored 20 goals and added 19 assists, good for second on the team in scoring. He finished his career in style, scoring the game-winning goal with 14 seconds left on senior night.
Masconomet junior Kate Kitsakos, who scored 18 points in the Chieftains’ tournament victory over Andover last Saturday, has close local connections. Her cousin Lexi Kitsakos of Merrimac was a track star for Pentucket and is currently a sophomore standout at UMass Lowell.
As a former high school offensive tackle, I am more fascinated than most by offensive line facts. But the story of Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews, the latest in the legendary Matthews football family who is headed into the NFL draft this May, is amazing by any measure. If Jake does make the NFL — and he is expected to — he will become the SEVENTH member of his family to play in the league.
That includes a Hall of Famer (father Bruce), a current All-Pro (cousin Clay III), a former Pro Bowler (uncle Clay Jr.) along with grandfather Clay Sr., brother Kevin and cousin Casey.
Now that is amazing.
