Whirlaway runners finish 1-2 at New Bedford

---- — NEW BEDFORD — Three of its age division teams won titles Sunday, but that was hardly the highlight for the Whirlaway Racing team at the New Bedford Half-Marathon.

In the open division, Whirlaway runners Ruben Sanca and Nick Karwoski finished one-two in the entire field of 2,872 runners. Sanca was timed in a sizzling 1:05.52, which is a 5:02/mile pace, and Karwoski wasn’t far behind at 1:06.10.

Also for the Whirlaway men, whose open team came in third, Andover’s Scott McGrath was 25th overall in 1:10.51 while Sam Fazioli of Salem, N.H. came in 71st at 1:13.55.

Also for the men, Craig Fram of Derry led the men’s seniors team to a first place in its division with a time of 1:18.31. Paul Doe, also of Derry was next at 1:21.30 while North Andover’s Doug Martyn and John Gorman were fifth and sixth respectively.

The men’s masters team, paced by Eric Williams and Joe Navas, was second.

On the women’s side, the Whirlaways masters and seniors team both placed first.

For the seniors team, former Olympian Maria Servin was first in 1:28.41. She was backed up nicely by Methuen’s Nancy Corsaro (1:34.18) and Derry’s Lisa Zappala (1:35.43). Christin Doneski led the masters squad with a 1:27.23.

The women’s open team finished sixth, but Derry’s Amy Bernard had a fine day, finishing 18th overall. The Pinkerton Academy cross country coach had a personal-best time of 1:24.04.
