Savard suffers grade two concussion

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a grade two concussion after being leveled by a blindside hit by Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke in Sunday's game.

General manager Peter Chiarelli said that team doctor Peter Asnis and a concussion specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital evaluated and diagnosed Savard.

The Bruins medical staff will continue to monitor and evaluate Savard for up to five days before they offer an update on his prognosis.

Savard had just taken a shot from above the circles when Cooke came from behind, raised his shoulder and struck Savard in the head. Savard was prone on the ice for several minutes before being carried off.

Bruins coach Claude Julien said after the game he considered it a "dirty hit." No penalty was called.

Pro football: Steelers QB attorney states 'No sexual assault occurred'

A high-profile defense attorney hired by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger disputed a college student's claim that the two-time Super Bowl winner sexually assaulted her at a Georgia nightclub.

The 20-year-old told police Roethlisberger, who had been out barhopping with friends, assaulted her early Friday. Roethlisberger has not been charged.

"The facts show that there was no criminal activity. No sexual assault occurred," attorney Ed Garland said in a statement. "Ben is completely innocent of any crime."

Milledgeville police said at a press conference that they expect to interview Roethlisberger in the next several days. They said they have not taken a DNA sample from him but probably will.

Authorities also said the woman has hired an attorney, though they would not identify him or her. The woman's name has not been released.

They expect to interview about eight people and said they are reviewing video footage obtained from several businesses. They declined to elaborate.

"The investigation is ongoing. It would be premature to make any announcement at this time," said Fred Bright, district attorney for the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit. "When the facts are in and a decision is made, we will let you know."

More pro football: Free agent OT Green signs three-year deal with Bills

An expensive steak dinner he couldn't finish and an offer he couldn't refuse were enough to convince veteran offensive tackle Cornell Green to sign with the Buffalo Bills.

A night after being wined and dined by the Bills, Green signed a three-year contract, the team's first addition three days into the NFL's free agency period.

Listed at 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, Green said he's been told he'll be the team's new starting right tackle, taking over the position after Brad Butler retired last month. Green's a 10-year NFL veteran, who spent the past three seasons as the Oakland Raiders starting right tackle. ... The Panthers added to their purge of veterans with the release of longtime fullback Brad Hoover, leaving Carolina with only three players on the roster older than 30.

Letting 33-year-old Hoover go saves the Panthers close to $1 million in payroll for the 2010 season and ends his 10-year stay in Carolina.

Pro baseball: Selig says too soon to determine if HGH test valid

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says it's too soon to determine whether a blood test for human growth hormone can be used for minor leaguers.

The United Kingdom Anti-Doping authority announced a two-year ban on Feb. 23 for rugby player Terry Newton, saying he had tested positive and was the first athlete suspended for using HGH.

Speaking before receiving a lifetime achievement award at the annual dinner of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Selig said Dr. Gary Green, the sport's outside expert, and other medical staff were examining the data.

Selig said the scientific experts haven't been able to give him a timeframe for their conclusions.

More pro baseball: Canadian doctor says HGH was for him

A sports doctor at the center of drug investigations in Canada and the United States said he treated Alex Rodriguez after the Yankees slugger had hip surgery last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but not human growth hormone.

Dr. Anthony Galea also told The Associated Press an assistant who was stopped at the U.S.-Canadian border in Buffalo, N.Y., last year was carrying only a minuscule amount of HGH — which Galea said was for his own use.

The doctor reiterated that he has never given the drug to an athlete.

"I only brought enough for her to do two injections into me because I was away for two nights," said Galea, who believes authorities and the media have exaggerated the accusations involving him and his practice.

"They made it look like I had 100 vials. I had one little vial and two doses were for me and you think that someone along the line would ask "'Well how much is there?"'

More pro baseball: Padres thrilled with Muhammad Ali clubhouse visit

The San Diego Padres are thrilled following a clubhouse visit by Muhammad Ali.

Dozens of players and coaches waited in a long line to shake hands and take pictures with the boxing great, who made a 45-minute appearance for the Athletes for Hope foundation.

Padres officials say Ali is only scheduled to meet with a few big league teams.

Outfielder Aaron Cunningham and reliever Mike Adams heard on Sunday that Ali might be visiting, so they each purchased a pair of boxing gloves just in case. Both walked away with autographs and a cherished memory.

Pro basketball: Spurs G Parker won't need surgery for broken hand

Spurs guard Tony Parker won't need surgery on his broken right hand, meaning he may be able to return for the playoffs. He is expected to miss about six weeks.

Tests showed Parker fractured the fourth metacarpal in his shooting hand Saturday during a victory at Memphis. He was averaging 16.5 points per game, but has been hobbled all season by a slew of injuries. Now the Spurs will be without their second-leading scorer until at least the playoffs.

Pro hockey: Reebok says progress made in search for Crosby gear

Reebok says its tipline and $10,000 reward for Sidney Crosby's missing Olympic glove and stick are already paying dividends.

Len Rhodes, vice president and general manager for Reebok Hockey CCM, says the tipline is producing everything from encouraging comments to claims of "potential information."

College football: Leach set to be deposed Friday in Lubbock

Mike Leach is expected to return to Lubbock later this week to answer questions under oath from attorneys for Texas Tech handling the former football coach's lawsuit against the school.

Leach, who currently lives with his family in Key West, Fla., is set for oral and video depositions beginning Friday at the offices of his Lubbock attorney, Ted Liggett. The attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday and Leach did respond to an e-mail and a text message.

College basketball: Hawaii men's coach fired after three seasons

Bob Nash was fired as coach of the University of Hawaii's men's basketball team after posting a 34-56 record over three seasons.

"This was a very tough decision," athletic director Jim Donovan said in a statement. "No person has shown more dedication to UH basketball than Bob Nash."

Nash was a member of the "Fabulous Five," a group of UH basketball players during the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons that led the team to a 47-8 record. They made the postseason twice, including the school's first NCAA tournament appearance.
