Merrimack roundup: Powerful pitching sends Warrior softball to sweep

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Complete games from Kelli Jo Deardorff and freshman Alexis Perry allowed Merrimack College’s softball team to sweep a doubleheader over Bentley.

Deardorff scattered eight hits and struck out six as the Warriors (10-14 overall, 3-2 in Northeast-10) won Game 1, 8-1.

Tawny Palmieri and Jaclyn Giovannini blasted two-run home runs while Lindsay Gibbs and Kelsey Francher had solo shots.

In Game 2, Perry spun a strong three-hitter for a 4-0 shutout victory.

Keaira Monet Perry had two hits in the victory and Giovannini sparked a three-run first inning with a run-scoring double.

Cashman tough-luck loser

Sophomore Tim Cashman gave up just three hits in a complete-game, four-hit performance, but Merrimack couldn’t take advantage in a 3-1 loss to UMass Lowell, its third straight setback.

All of the River Hawks’ runs were unearned as the Warriors committed three errors.

Freshman Matt Brown drove in the lone Merrimack run in the fourth inning on a single that scored Alan Pastyrnak Jr. (hit by pitch).

Men’s tennis takes 18th straight

The Warrior men’s tennis team took down Bentley, 7-2, for their eighth straight NE-10 victory this season and 18th overall.

With a Stonehill loss tomorrow, Merrimack would clinch at least a tie for the league title for the third straight season.

The Warriors swept the doubles led by Amesbury’s Vince Bellino, who also convincingly won his singles match in straight sets.

Women net win over Colby Sawyer

Led by the third doubles pair of Atkinson’s Katie Veasey and North Andover’s Rachel Muller, Merrimack’s women’s tennis team took a non-conference decision over Colby Sawyer, 6-3.

Veasey and Muller took down their opponents, 8-4, while Mullen also shined at third singles, winning 6-1, 6-3.
