Male athletes welcomed DeCosmo 'like a sister'

Since she had grown up playing on various boys teams, Kaylie DeCosmo was only a little nervous about playing with the Pinkerton boys hockey team last year.

It turned out that she didn’t need to worry at all.

“I loved it,” she said. “The boys welcomed me right away and seemed to look at me as their sister. They looked after me.

“It was really great. The boys play more heads up and it’s more physical, and I like that because I’m a very aggressive player.”

DeCosmo fit right in skill-wise. As the second line center, she led the JV team with four goals.

As for this year, DeCosmo has no illusions about being a varsity ice hockey player.

“If it happens, it happens,’ she said. “My goal is just to make the team. I think it’s an accomplishment just to play with the boys.”

On the other hand, DeCosmo is far from opposed to playing on a girls team. She and her father have lobbied for several years to start a girls team at Pinkerton but, for various reasons, it hasn’t happened.

But she hasn’t given up hope that it won’t eventually happen at Pinkerton, if not for her then for her younger sister Brittany, who is a seventh grader and a promising hockey player.
