Around the Horn with David Crichton, Windham football captain

Michael Muldoon

---- — David Crichton is a returning starting lineman for the Windham High football team. The 6-0, 235-pounder hopes to help lead the Jaguars to another playoff berth.

Leading is second nature to Crichton. He’s a football tri-captain and a captain-elect in wrestling after finishing second in the heavyweight division at Division 3 States.

“David is a fierce competitor on the field but understands there is a value to doing things the right way and this is evident in his display of character and sportsmanship,” said football coach Bill Raycraft. “He’s a great athlete, he has some of the best hands on the team even at his size. He started out as a tight end for us as a freshman, but in true David form, had no issue with moving positions to tackle for the betterment of the team.”

In this week’s Around the Horn, Crichton spoke of winning a prestigious award, how seriously he takes being captain and his greatest fear.

What are your goals for this year? “Personally, I’d like to be the best role model and leader I can be. We hope to make the playoffs and take it from there.”

What’s your favorite personal athletic achievement? “Freshman year I won the Black Line Award in memory of Don Holleder, who was an All-American for West Point. It’s an honor I’m very proud of. It goes to one player on any team that puts in for it.”

What’s your favorite sport? “I’ve played football for so long but wrestling is starting to grow on me.”

How are you doing academically? “I’m 54th out of 170 in my class. I work hard.”

Are you looking at any schools? “Right now I love UConn. That’s my top choice. I like UNH a lot, RPI, Miami of Ohio and Coast Guard.”

What’s been the lowest point of your career? “At the beginning of wrestling last year I had a shoulder injury. I missed close to a month. It was tough. I was behind everyone.”

Are you involved in any other activities? “Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT). We do fundraisers and promote athletic events. I help with student council, too.”

What does it mean to be a two-sport captain? “It’s a big honor. It’s nice to know coaches recognize what type of teammate I am. It makes me feel humbled.”

Do you work? “In spring I plan on getting almost a full-time job to get money for college.”

What’s something people don’t know about you? “I’m very afraid of mice and rats.”

Are you from an athletic family? “My dad was a swimmer and football player at Longmeadow (Mass.) High. My sister, Samantha, a junior at Windham, does track, lacrosse and volleyball.”

What’s your dream job? “I’m leaning toward engineering. Or a teacher in high school.”

Who’s your dream date? “Mila Kunis.”

What is your pet peeve? “When people don’t put effort into school or sports.”

Do you have a nickname? “Big Dave.”

Who do you follow on Twitter-Facebook? “Adam Schefter and Skip Bayless.”

Do you have any pets? “My dog died.”

What is the most embarrassing song you have in your iPod? “‘Call Me Maybe.’”
