Butterbrodt takes 2nd

St. John’s Prep junior Ian Butterbrodt of North Andover took second in the prestigious Super 32 wrestling tournament in Greensboro, N.C., the weekend before last. He lost in the 220-pound finals to Pennsylvania star Jordan Wood.

Also, North Andover High’s Brad Drover finished 12th at 170 pounds, winning three straight matches before falling 3-1 in the quarterfinals to Michigan’s Andrew Garcia. Methuen star and New England champion Christian Monserrat was 2-2 in his weight class and did not place.

Entering 25th season

Haverhill native John Taffe, who graduated from Haverhill High in 1980 and was on a state championship team in 1978, is entering his 25th season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swim teams at Springfield College. His teams are traditionally among the best in Division 3.

Prayers for Spinelli

Prayers and well wishes are pouring out on Facebook for Framingham State junior Anthony Spinelli, a Haverhill High grad who recently lost both of his legs following a motorcycle crash. Spinelli, whose younger sister Emily is a sophomore setter for the Hillies’ volleyball team, is an avid skier, played several sports at Haverhill and is pursuing a career in criminal justice.

Smith over Lahiff

In a rarity, two former local high school standouts wrestled each other in a Division 1 meet last week when, at 174 pounds, former Timberlane star Alex Smith of Army defeated Franklin Marshall’s Colin Lahiff, a Brooks graduate from Haverhill by a 14-1 score.

One weary QB

Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday couldn’t lead his team to an upset of Oregon the weekend before last, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying. He completed 58 of 89 passes for 557 yards.

Those 89 attempts broke the collegiate record of 83 set by Drew Brees for Purdue against Wisconsin in 1998.

Bernard takes 4th

Just one day after her Pinkerton girls cross country team finished second at the Meet of Champions, head coach Amy Bernard finished as the fourth female at the Manchester City Marathon, running a 3:03.48, which is close to her best time of 3:02 run at the Vermont City Marathon, where she qualified for next year’s Boston Marathon. Methuen’s Nancy Corsaro came in 14th at Manchester in 3:18.40.
