EMass. Cross Country: Rangers’ Aruri and Reggies’ Tejeda are historic qualifiers

WRENTHAM — Methuen coach Bill James said it was the first time in eight years. Greater Lawrence Tech coach Jay Santomassino said it was the first time in at least 20 times and perhaps ever.

They were referring to their runners qualifying for the Massachusetts Division 1 and Division 2 All-State Meets next Saturday in Gardner.

Methuen actually had two qualifiers: senior Marwah Haq (15th place in Division 1) and junior Hannah Wunderlich (21st place). Greater Lawrence Tech junior Yosvaldy Tejeda finished sixth in Division 3.

The top team performance at yesterday’s six Eastern Mass. Divisional meets was a sixth-place by the North Andover boys. They narrowly missed qualifying for All-States. The top four teams in each division advance.

Greater Lawrence coach Jay Santomassino said of Tejada,

“He did unbelievable. I predicted 16:25 (his actual time). I have to do a scratch ticket tonight! We told him he had to go out fast. He was in second through 1.5-2 miles. They caught up but had enough left in the tank.”

The top individual performer was a fourth in EMass. Division 1 by Andover senior Leila Aruri, who ran a fine 18:25.2. over the 3.1 mile course. The top boys were Tejeda, a seventh by North Reading’s Jake O’Connell and ninth-place finishes by North Andover’s Martin Conrad and Methuen’s Jeff Reddy.

In addition to Aruri, Central Catholic’s Tiffany Simione grabbed a sixth in the fastest area time (18:45) while North Reading’s Nikki Roberts also took sixth in Division 5.
