---- — Allen outduels Kuchar in classic
In the marquee pitching matchup of the Cape Ann League weekend, North Reading’s Scott Allen outdueled Pentucket’s Ryan Kuchar, 1-0. The Hornets picked up the only run in the second when Colby Maiola singled, stole second and raced in on Allen’s base hit. From there, it was pitching perfection on both sides. Allen grabbed his first win of the year with a three-hitter, striking out four. Kuchar fanned nine in his six frames, allowing just four hits.
Georgetown’s Thomas Lane gave his club a chance to win, with seven superb innings, and his Phillips Academy mates accommodated, walking off with a 3-2 thriller over DeMatha Prep of Maryland. With the score knotted 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Kenta Nomoto doubled and raced home on Kevin Superko’s game-winning base hit. Lane dazzled, going all seven, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four.
One inning, two slams for Hillner
Brooks School’s softball team, at 0-3, needed something good to happen, and Gabi Hillner was more than happy to provide the fireworks. Haverhill’s Hillner blasted a pair of grand slams — both in the 11-run fourth inning — to bust things open and give Brooks its first victory of the spring. Andover’s Cassandra Hunt earned the win on the hill, helping her own cause with a 5 for 5 afternoon that produced three runs.
