HAVERHILL — The Newburyport American Legion Post 150 team has been plagued by mistakes this month, but it played solid baseball yesterday at the expense of Haverhill Post 4.
Behind the pitching of Joe LeVasseur and Georgetown’s David Ingraham, Newburyport shut out Post 4 6-0. LeVasseur, who played at Bishop Fenwick, allowed five hits and struck out 10 in six innings and Ingraham mopped up in the seventh.
Groveland’s Zach Rice, a St. John’s Prep graduate headed to UMass Amherst, led the offense with two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Rich Fecteau was 2 for 3.
Eight of the starters had base hits for Newburyport (4-3, 2-3 in District 8).
For Post 4, Shane Surrette started and took the loss.
George Gauthier had a single and double in defeat and Matt Keefe pitched well in relief.
Salem nips Rochester
Matt Grant had two hits, including the the game-winning RBI in the seventh as Salem Post 63 edged Rochester 7-6. Cameron knocked in Timberlane teammate Jake Cameron for the final run. Nate Baker added a two-run double for Salem (3-0) and C.J. Beaulieu got the win with three innings of relief of Mitch Dufton, who started and gave up two runs in five innings.
Vargas carries Lawrence
Lawrence Legion Post 15 beat Peabody 2 -0 behind the pitching of Joan Varges, who allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
Lawrence scored both runs in fourth inning and held Peabody scoreless with perfect defense.
The key hits for Lawrence were by David Quezada and Frank Santos.
Gerossi saves Post 9
LONDONDERRY — Derry Post 9 pushed a run across in the top of the ninth to slip past Londonderry 7-6 in American Legion action yesterday.
Chris Gerossi opened the inning with a double and later scored the winning run when Grant Wagner drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Gerossi also pitched the ninth to get the save.
Dan Morin started for Derry and pitched six strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits while Riley Cahill got the win.
Justin Bundzinski was the hitting star, going 3 for 4 with a two-run triple and four RBIs.
Matt Marchman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Post 9 (10-1, 4-0 in District B).
Brady shines in loss at Shriners All-Star game
Haverhill’s Chance Brady rushed for 160 yards and was his team’s MVP but the North fell to the South 21-7 in the Shriners All-Star Football Classic at Bentley College yesterday.
The North’s lone touchdown was a 41-yard TD pass from Lowell’s Cameron Latta to Shawsheen’s Devonn Pratt.
