Tough day for locals in Granite State golf

Tough weather conditions made for a tough day for the area combatants at the New Hampshire High School Golf Championships yesterday.

A handful of area players advanced to tomorrow’s individual championships, but top seeded Windham, in Division 2, and Pelham, in Division 3, came up short in their bids to cap the season with a state title.

Here’s a look at the action yesterday:

DIVISION 1

Keene’s Chelso Barrett fired a 68 to grab a five-shot lead into round 2 of the individual event. He is bidding for his third straight state championship.

Londonderry’s Taylor Simpson at 78, and Timberlane’s Jameson Collins were the only qualifiers locally to advance to tomorrow’s action.

Pinkerton, at 422, and Londonderry, at 425, finished 9th and 10th in the 10-team event won by Bedford at 386.

DIVISION 2

Windham ran into a buzzsaw in defending champ Hanover, falling 388-403, in the 12-team meet.

Sanborn Regional was 10th at 443.

Windham No. 1 Connor Greenleaf was the low area performer, tying for fourth at 77. He’ll look to make up those four shots tomorrow in the individual at Canterbury Woods. Jaguars Adam Dolan and Max Masse also qualified with 78s.

Sanborn’s Chris Pasto shot 81, also to advance.

DIVISION 3

Pelham took third at the Division 3 Championship, finishing 11 shots off Bow’s pace, 321-332. Mascenic took second at 326. The Pythons had three qualifiers for the individual, led by Jake Vaiknoras, who is third (79), two shots off the pace of Mascenic’s Roman Ojala. Nick Neary is at 82 and Alex Newton 84 as they head to round to tomorrow.
