Lawrence's Santos preps for biggest fight

Unbeaten heavyweight (6-0) set for six-round test

Almost four months since his TKO of 400-pounder Dustin Nichols in Alabama, Lawrence’s unbeaten heavyweight, Alexis Santos is ready to pick on someone his own size.

Now, 6-0 with five knockouts as a pro, Santos will make his six-round debut on Oct. 18 vs. Ohio’s Josh Harris on a loaded CES Boxing professional card at Twin River Casino in Rhode Island.

“I’m feeling great, and this is a big fight for me,” said the 23-year-old Santos. “This could make something for us. The kid is ballsy. He’s talking a lot of stuff. And he’s ranked 24 as a cruiserweight in America. It should be a great test.”

Added Santos’ trainer Sean Farley, “I give the kid credit. He’s the only guy around New England who will fight Alexis.”

AMATEUR SHOW SUNDAY AT ELKS

Looking for a great diversion Sunday, before the 4:30 Patriots-Broncos’ kickoff?

Intenze-978 boxing has the perfect solution as it hosts Merrimack Valley Fight Night II: “Fighting for a Cure.”

An amateur boxing card kicks off at 2 p.m., Sunday at the Lawrence Elks on Andover Street.

“It’s for a great cause in breast cancer awareness,” said trainer Sean Farley. “And the best thing about this card is it focuses on a lot of good kids from the city of Lawrence, trying to get their start in the sport. Almost a dozen of these kids are from the city, and they’re trying to do the right thing.”

Some of the city fighters involved in the action include: Natalia Espaillat, Danyer Fabian, Gerald Rosario, Richie Agostini, Dylan Barstow, Patrick Deleon, Jose Abreu, Carlos Rivera and Bryan LaSanta.

Tickets are available at the door for $20, $10 for students. For more information, call 978-973-1556.
