Around the Horn with Scott Farley

---- — Unfortunately, Scott Farley and the Haverhill golf team did not pick a good day a couiple of weeks ago to have a bad round.

Facing North Andover, at which Farley’s father Peter coaches, the Hillies had probably their worst day of the season, falling to the Knights 11-5.

Other than that, however, Haverhill has enjoyed an excellent season, 9-3-1, with Farley, as well as fellow co-captain Ryan Paris (7-3-3) major reason. Farley has a stroke average of 36 and has a record of 10-1-2.

“He has a very good swing and really has a complete game,” said Haverhill coach Kevin Murphy. “He and Ryan Paris are having great years and they’ve been fantastic in best-ball (competition).”

We caught up with Farley recently to go Around the Horn.

Coming from a golf family, when did you start playing?

“I probably had a club in my hand when I was three or four and I started playing competitively when I was seven.

With a father as a great player, coach and teaching pro and talented older brother (Craig, a 2010 E-T All-Star now playing at Salem State), do you feel any pressure to be highly successful?

“I try not to let it get to me. A lot of people say that golf comes naturally to me and it definitely helps, but I don’t feel any pressure.”

Is this the best team you’ve played on at Haverhill?

“That team with my brother two years ago was probably a little better, but we’re right up there.”

What’s it like to play against your father’s team?

“I always look forward to playing against him. There’s a lot of trash talk before the match. Losing this year was pretty disappointing but I think we’re 2-2 against his teams since I’ve been playing.”

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your father about golf?

It’s the mental game, about having mental toughness. The physical part comes easily.”

How would you compare yourself to your brother on the course?

“I can hit the ball farther, and I think the strength of my game is my short game, but he has a better all-around game.”

What are your goals for the season?

“Individually, I’ve always wanted to win the MVC Open and I want the team to get to the state finals.”

Being a hockey player as well, and a captain this year, how does that sport rank with you?

“Hockey has always been my favorite sport. I probably spend more time with golf, but I love hockey.”

It seems that golf and hockey require different-type personalities — which one does your personality fit better?

“Definitely hockey. I get angry pretty easily and that’s not so good in golf.”

Do you play any other sports?

“I used to play baseball. I gave it up my freshman year, but I might make a comeback this year.”

Any pet peeves?

“Kids that tape their ankles in hockey for no reason.”

What are your college plans?

“I haven’t decided if I’m going to play golf in college yet. Right now, I’m looking at Elon College (N.C.), Bentley and UMass Amherst. I probably want to get into business.”
