Sports in a minute

Hanigan’s terrific defense

Andover High grad and Cincinnati Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan threw out 48.5 percent of base stealers (32 of 66) this year, the best mark in the major leagues.

Second was St. Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina (47.9 percent) followed by Arizona Diamondbacks’ Miguel Montero (42.1 percent).

Hanigan ranked third among major league catchers in fielding percentage (.995).

He committed the third fewest errors (4) among major league backstops.

He also led all major league catchers with a 3.05 catchers earned run average. He ranked second in fewest passed balls allowed (3).

Hanigan caught in 110 games, including making 98 starts this year for the Reds. He never played in 100 or more games in one major league season until this year.

Big Game Alert!

The big local game of the day is Windham field hockey (10-1-1) hosting St. Thomas Aquinas (9-2-0) at 4 p.m.

Windham is led by Courtney Sweeny who netted a hat trick in a recent victory over Pelham.

Sweeny was a Division 3 first-team lacrosse selection last spring when she scored 62 goals with 76 assists for the unbeaten Division 3 champion Jaguars.

Another interesting game today has Central Catholic field hockey at North Andover.

Montelus selected for Army Bowl

Everett High School guard John Montelus has been selected for U.S. Army All-American Bowl, becoming the first player from Massachusetts in three years to be selected to play in the game.

The 6-5, 295-pounder is committed to the University of Notre Dame.

His bio on www.goarmy.com states: “Montelus is a big, thick guard with huge shoulders and a solid lower body. He is able to generate a lot of power with his frame and is very light on his feet for his size, controlling defensive ends and tackles equally well. Montelus complements his physical tools by being an intense competitor, playing with a mean streak but still maintaining control. He helped lead the Everett squad to an undefeated season as a junior.”
