Christine Moodie scored a pair of goals midway through the game, and that was all Stonehill College needed to beat the Merrimack women’s soccer team, 2-1, yesterday.
Merrimack (8-5, 6-4 Northeast-10) could only muster one goal in the second half off the foot of senior Jamie Alnwick set up by North Andover’s Jenn Pino, but the early two-goal deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
With five shots attempts, Alnwick was the game’s leading offensive generator for the Warriors.
Two-game lead becomes volleyball loss
After taking the first two games, a 29-27 loss in Game 3 was the beginning of the end for the Merrimack women’s volleyball team, who lost in five games to Stonehill last night.
The Warriors (7-10, 0-4 NE-10) were led by sophomore Stephanie Sheehan (team-high 13 kills, 14 digs and four blocks) and Lawrence’s Corrine Gosselin (10 kills and three blocks).
The Skyhawks (9-8) were paced by junior Kirsten Arvidson of Andover who finished with a match-high 16 kills.
Phelan XC
rookie of week
After leading the Merrimack women’s cross country team to a highly respectable 28th-place finish at the New England Championships Sunday, Kerry Phelan was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week.
Led by Phelan, the Merrimack women beat Division I foe Northeastern and fellow Northeast-10 Conference rivals Saint Michael’s, Saint Anselm, UMass-Lowell, New Haven and Franklin Pierce, as part of the 37-school field.
Finishing 83rd overall, Phelan set a new school record in the 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:43.19, the top time among all of her fellow NE-10 competitors.
