WORCESTER — Andover’s Tyler Marshall will be haunting the dreams of Worcester Academy’s players for quite some time after his performance yesterday.
Twice the Hilltoppers drove inside the 25-yard line, and both times Marshall turned them away with no points on fourth down as Phillips Academy earned a huge 31-0 victory yesterday afternoon.
“The defense was just fantastic,” said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. “It’s been coming on for weeks. Tyler was immense. Those two goal-line stands were huge.”
The first came late in the second quarter, when Marshall forced the pitch on an option and, with the help of North Reading’s Bobby Needham, dragged the quarterback down to force a turnover on downs.
Worcester Academy again drove into the red zone in the third, but again Marshall dashed any scoring chance when he stuffed the quarterback at the 4-yard line on fourth down.
It was an overall huge day for Marshall, a junior linebacker, who had nine tackles and a sack. Fellow Andoverite Will Clark added seven tackles, an interception and rushed for Phillips’ final touchdown of the day.
Aside from Clark’s score, the offense was all QB Joey Verhaegh and receiver Larkin Kemp. The two hooked up five times for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Those were the only passes Verhaegh threw all day.
“When they are on, it is really something to see,” said Modeste. “There were timing routes and deep balls. They were really locked in.”
The Big Blue picked the right time for their best game of the year as they host archrival Phillips Exeter next Saturday at 2 p.m..
“Now we have the big one,” said Modeste. “They are unbeaten, so if we could win that one it would be a wonderful end to the season.”
