Jones, Huskies shine at state meet

---- — It was a great day for Andover’s Michaela Jones and the Bradford Huskies cross country teams at the Middle School state meet held in Tewksbury over the weekend.

Jones, a Pike School student who recently placed first at a big invitational in Gloucester, came in first in the seventh grade race with a new record time of 10:37 on the 1.7-mile course.

The Huskies, meanwhile, continued their recent success by coming in third out of 34 teams in the championship boys race and sixth out of 26 teams in the championship girls race.

Leading the way for the Huskies, despite losing one of his spikes early in the race and running with just one shoe, was 11-year-old Connor Alessi, who came in 18th out of 237 runners with a time of 10:17.

He was followed in 20th by Jacob Seavey (10:20) and 21st by Troy Sliney (10:21). Also scoring for the Huskies were Connor Wertz in 27th (10:24) and Mark Hanedanian in 31st (10:31). Aidan Wertz was 37th and Griffin Woolbert was 58th.

On the girls side, 10-year-old Meaghan Woolbert led the way, finishing 24th in 11:32 while Gabrielle Sanchez was 37th (11:43), Madeline Kelleher came in 38th (11:43), Amy Seavey took 43rd (11:50) and Madison Craven was 53rd.

The Huskies also shined in the fifth and sixth grade race, led by fifth grader Peter Crapsey, who was runner-up in 10:44. Liam Nikas, a sixth grader, was seventh in 10:46 and fifth grader Cormac Crippen was seventh in 11:05.

Also, Ryan Basile and Aidan Kallery were 13th and 14th respectively.
