Red Sox will name Juan Nieves pitching coach

---- — Juan Nieves, who hurled a no-hitter April 15, 1987 at just 22 years old against the Baltimore Orioles, will become the new Boston Red Sox pitching coach, according to several reports from the GM meetings in Indian Wells, Calif.

The news was first reported by CBS Sports baseball insider Jon Heyman.

Nieves, 47, was the White Sox bullpen coach the past five seasons. Before that, he spent nine years as a pitching coach in the White Sox minor league system, including at Triple-A Charlotte from 2005-07.

The Chicago bullpen ranked eighth in ERA (3.75 in the American League and 16th in the majors this past season.

The left-handed throwing Nieves spent three years in the majors (1986-88), all with the Milwaukee Brewers, and posted a 32-25 record and 4.71 ERA in 94 games, including 81 starts.
