The real McCoy

One of the more fascinating, and under-reported, stories in sports is that of University of Texas backup quarterback Case McCoy.

The junior QB was born with scleroderma, a disease that “causes thickening of the skin and blood vessels when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue.”

McCoy has been battling the potentially fatal disease since he was 4-years-old, and his brother — Texas legend and current Cleveland QB Colt McCoy — told radio stations that Case was frequently hospitalized as a kid. It still clearly affects the left side of his face.

Despite the illness, Case has become a favorite for the Longhorns when called upon this season. Two weeks ago, he was 6 for 8 for 109 yards to rally Texas for a victory over Kansas.

Bird, really?

Larry Bird remains the king of basketball in Boston even 20 years removed from his last NBA game. But while he is revered by Celtics fans, few would truly argue he is the greatest player in NBA history.

Obsessed Bird fans, however, have a kindred spirit in basketball-reference.com’s complex and mind-numbingly stupid “Elo Player Ratings.”

Need proof this system is pointlessly-moronic? Michael Jordan is ranked No. 28 all-time.

Come on basketball-reference.com. What’s the point?
