Andover family loves the Hoyas and the Friars

Go Hoyas and friars

The Torres family of Andover loves Big East sports. @text5:Jessica Torres@text5: is a cheerleader for the 7th-ranked Georgetown men’s basketball team and her brother @text5:Josh Torres@text5: is a senior midfielder for the Providence lacrosse team. He has two goals and an assist in two games. Next up is Andover senior @text5:Jaclyn Torres@text5:, a Brown lacrosse recruit.

Pentucket brawl

Pentucket-Georgetown’s @text5:Mike Kutcher@text5: and three Bishop Fenwick players were all ejected for fighting in the hockey season finale for both schools.

Sachems coach @text5:Bill Burns@text5: ripped the refs: “In my mind, that was the worst piece of officiating I’ve ever seen. It’s a new low for Division 2.”

Clean sweep

The NESCAC men’s basketball awards came out and our region did itself proud. Rookie of the Year was Tufts’ @text5:Tom Palleschi@text5: from Haverhill and Phillips (10.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks). Coach of the Year was Andover native @text5:David Hixon@text5: from Amherst (25-2 NESCAC champs) and second-team All-NESCAC honors went to 1,000-point scorer senior @text5:Peter Kaasila@text5: from Plaistow and Amherst (13.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, .641 shooting).

misguided MVC

Strange choices for the MVC basketball coaches of the year. Central Catholic boys coach @text5:Rick Nault@text5: and Andover girls coach @text5:Jim Tildsley@text5: are perennial honorees who have eye-popping records almost any coach in New England (never mind the league) could only dream about.

So when North Andover ties the Raiders for the MVC Large title and the Billerica girls are the Large champs, how do you not give it to NA’s @text5:Mike McVeigh@text5: and the Indians’ @text5:Chris Doneski@text5:?

Also, it was surprising that the entire Central starting five made the 11-player first team. While all five are top players, I’d have an awfully hard time giving it to five from one team.

Blue Devils care

I love Salem freshman boys basketball coach @text5:Brian Stanton’s@text5: outlook on coaching. He stresses winning on and off the court. This year’s team went 13-5 and did a lot of volunteer work with the Lazarus House Good Shepherd food pantry in Lawrence.

Penn State family

Boston College recently offered a scholarship to Bergen (N.J.) Catholic junior defensive end @text5:Kurt Holuba@text5:. The Eagles, however, will probably be out of luck if Penn State offers. The Penn State 118,000-square foot indoor practice facility, Holuba Hall, was donated by his family.

Role model?

Hard to believe @text5:John Daly@text5: is homeschooling his son, fourth-grader @text5:John Daly Jr.@text5: The oft-troubled golfer, a reality show in waiting, doesn’t strike me as the scholarly type.

eighth all-time

Virginia freshman swimmer @text5:Rachel Moore@text5: of Andover placed 10th in the 200-yard butterfly 1:57.92 at the ACC Championships. She now ranks eighth on UVa’s all-time list.

i’ll drink to that

Add to the All-Name Team UMass Lowell women’s trackster @text5:Shaniece Cola@text5:.
