Merrimack women bow out

WORCESTER, Mass. — Despite holding a lead early in the second half, and forcing a tied with just four minutes to go in the game, the Merrimack women’s basketball team could not pull off its third straight upset, falling to No. 3 Assumption 74-64 in the Northeast-10 semifinals last night.

The game was decided in the final minutes. With the game tied 64-64 with just four minutes to go, Merrimack went cold shooting 0 for 7 and the Greyhounds finished the game on a 10-0 run to clinch the victory.

The Warriors finish the season 17-12 overall, giving them a 12-win improvement from last season, the best in the country.

Leading Merrimack last night was Kelly Schatzlein, who finished with her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Chloe Rothman added a team-high 18 points on 7 for 10 from the floor. Shelby Secor added 10 points.

The Warriors grabbed their biggest lead of the game just over three minutes into the second half as Rothman was fouled on her three point attempt and she converted on all three free throws, making the score 44-40 Warriors.

The two teams went back-and-forth over the next five minutes as the Warriors tied the game at 55 on a Cassi Amenta layup. With 4:21 to play in the game, Rothman drilled a three pointer to give the Warriors their last lead of the game, 64-62.

The Greyhounds were led offensively by Gabrielle Gibson who led all scorers with 30 points. Jamie Insel scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the winning effort. Schatzlein finished off her great Merrimack career with 1,287 career points and 962 career rebounds. The point total is good for sixth on the Warriors all-time and the rebounding total is good for second on the all-time list. The loss also marks the end of the career for Katie Ganser and Jaclyn Lyons.
