One last look at Methuen's scoring machine

right place, right time

Methuen fan @text5:Brenda Mazzone @text5:got a nice photo (above) of @text5:Matt Bauchman @text5:celebrating his 92nd and final goal in his storied career for the Rangers. Bauchman tallied four times against Haverhill on Saturday, three in the final period.

Name to remember

One of the area’s most improved swimmers this winter was Central Catholic’s @text5:Will Pannos@text5:. The freshman from Andover capped off his season with a 12th in the 100 butterfly (56.23) at Division 1 States. The multi-talented Pannos is also an honor student, home room rep and drummer in the jazz band. Also, Pannos, a sportswriter for the school newspaper, obviously has inherited the family gift for writing.

Decision time

Salem basketball player @text5:Andrew Ruffen@text5: will be continuing his career at St. Joseph’s of Maine. Lawrence Academy’s @text5:Darrien Myers@text5: of North Andover (Trinity) and record-setting North Reading back @text5:Carl Lipani@text5: (Colby) will be playing football in the NESCAC and Phillips ace @text5:Kayla Maloney @text5:of Windham plans to pitch and study pre-med at Columbia.

Football Follies

There is a certain science to picking all-star teams. In football, often the best players play the same position so you balance the team out listing the players at another position.

A star running back, for example, often is a star linebacker or defensive back. But the player at least has to be pretty good at the other position. A buddy of mine from the Southern part of the state said his town’s local star, who made the 26-player @text5:Mass. Football Coaches Association All-State team@text5: as a defensive back, couldn’t have played more than a handful of plays on defense the entire season.

Soccer executive

Former North Andover High soccer and basketball captain @text5:Laura Doran@text5: was named director of operations for the newly relaunched Boston Breakers of the National Women’s Soccer League. Doran, 26, has worked in ticket operations for the Red Sox for six years, helping them with their record sellout streak, and has worked in media relations with the Celtics and as an intern on WEEI.

Her sister, @text5:Colleen Doran@text5:, is also big in the sports marketing world as an account supervisor at M&C Saatchi in New York City.

7-goal game

The game wasn’t called in but Tewksbury-Methuen beat Waltham 9-4 behind a whopping seven goals from @text5:Amanda Conway@text5: of Methuen. ... WPI has one of the tallest basketball players in the country. Freshman @text5:Mark Overdevest @text5:of New Zealand is 7-3.

Similar sisters

Interestingly, t@text5:he @text5:Passamontes @text5:of Pelham, senior @text5:Cassie@text5: and sophomore @text5:Sara@text5:, tied for 20th in the all-around at the N.H. State Gymnastics Meet. Both scored 31.175.@text5:

Say what?!

Andover senior@text5: Brian Manning @text5:won every event and won the state gymnastics all-around title by a staggering 14.5 points. The State’s Senior Gymnast of the Year? You guessed it, Burlington’s @text5:Evan Burk@text5:. Why do coaches so often make a mockery out of awards?

Penn State family

Boston College recently offered a scholarship to Bergen Catholic junior defensive end @text5:Kurt Holuba@text5:. The Eagles, however, will probably be out of luck if Penn State offers. The Penn State 118,000-square foot indoor practice facility, Holuba Hall, was donated by his family.
