Under the Lights: Andover's next great sprinter?

Baby brown

Andover swimming coach Marilyn Fitzgerald is beaming over the birth of her second great-grandchild. Bruce Brown of Andover and his wife, Margaret (O’Brien) Brown, welcomed Vera Blanchard Brown into the world on March 19.

Given that Bruce is one of the top sprinters in area history, and Margaret was a two-time basketball captain at Salve Regina University, Vera might pass on swimming.

“But I can always hope!” said Fitzgerald.

Hair today ...

Andover coach E.J. Perry got caught up in the spirit of the Andover Youth Services auction. How caught up? He wasn’t satisfied with how much money had been raised so he offered to have his football players shave his head to raise more money. Ouch, let’s just say none of the Golden Warriors have futures as barbers.

end of discussion

These NFL combine 40-yard dash times are a complete joke. They don’t use automatic timing so the accuracy is non-existent. It’s not even worth discussing them. I have no idea why they don’t invest a few thousand bucks and do it right. Guess the NFL doesn’t have the money.

From derry to lubbock

Pinkerton senior cheerleading captain Tom McCarthy will be continuing his cheering career at Texas Tech. He helped lead the Astros to another New England title this winter.

Hoops hotbed

Bedford stunned defending champion Bishop Guertin in the Division 1 N.H. girls basketball finale. That town of just 21,200 produces some talent considering three of the BG starters also are from there.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to BC baseball player John Hennessy of Andover (21 today), BC hockey coach Jim Logue of North Andover (turns 74 tomorrow), Methuen MMA star Calvin Kattar (turns 25 Tuesday), Bryant ace Britt Hart of North Andover (turns 22 Tuesday), Harvard hockey player Colin Blackwell of North Andover (turns 20 Thursday) and Brooks soccer coach Jaime Gilbert (turns 27 Thursday).
