Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney MVP Doug Gemmell has decided to continue his basketball career at the University of New England. The 6-4 Central Catholic senior from Windham was named All-MVC this winter.
Rags to riches
T.J. Cline didn’t even make varsity until his senior year at 4,600-student Plano West (Texas) High. Cline, who grew from 5-9 as a freshman to 6-8, averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds this year as a freshman for Division 1 Niagara. His mother is Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. She had a much better winning percentage than T.J.’s father, Tim Cline, who played for the Washington Generals.
Fagula vs. Jenness
We had always assumed Londonderry’s John Fagula was the winningest girls basketball coach in New Hampshire history. But Gary Jenness’ former assistant and current Groveton coach Timothy Haskins e-mailed that Jenness has a few more wins at 606. Jenness is still going strong, he guided White Mt. to the Division 3 finals this winter.
Eagle-Tribune first-team All-Decade player Sam Wheeler from Timberlane got hired as UMaine women’s basketball’s director of operations in January when Tracy Guerrette left to pursue a religious vocation in the Catholic church.
The University of Hartford website notes women’s assistant basketball coach Bill Sullivan and his wife, Jen, have two children. It neglects to point out “Jen” is head coach Jennifer Rizzotti.
Fly like the Eagles
Add to the All-Name Team Cinderella Florida Gulf Coast assistant Michael Fly (which coincidentally was my nickname in college), state champion Brighton basketball player Nickerson Success, Colby skier Paige Whistler and UMaine women’s hockey player Chloe Tinkler.
Senior four-year starter Mike Yastrzemski of Andover continues to produce for No. 3 Vanderbilt. He’s batting .282 (24 for 85) with 10 steals, 18 runs, 15 RBI and two homers for the 21-4 Commodores.
Big, bad bobby
Bobby Martin Jr. of Waltham, a 6-7 sophomore forward at Nobles, is gaining national attention. His father starred on those great Pitt teams of the late ‘80s with Charles Smith, Jerome “Send it in” Lane and Sean Miller.
The crazy conference realignments aren’t limited to Division 1 schools. Maine Presque Isle’s women’s teams are joining the Great South Athletic Conference in Georgia. The league consists of schools in Georgia (2), North Carolina, California, Michigan, Massachusetts (Pine Manor), Maine and Washington, D.C.
Lars Anderson has played for five teams in six months: Red Sox, Indians, Diamondbacks, White Sox and Blue Jays.
