Oppenheim shoots 63
in Q-School round
Andover’s Rob Oppenheim started off with a bang yesterday in Round 1 of the second stage of PGA Qualifying School.
He shot an 8-under par 63 to tie for the lowest score after 18 holes. The tournament is four rounds and the low 18 scores and ties move on to the final stage of PGA Q-School.
Oppenheim has some local help. Andover Country Club head pro Mike Menery is caddying for Oppenheim.
Nelson and all that Jazz
Bradford resident Jeff Nelson has been busy the last few weeks getting his part-time employer, the Utah Jazz, up to snuff on some recent and upcoming basketball games, including the Jazz trip to the TD Garden tonight.
Nelson has been busy as the Jazz’ northeast scout and has seen, in person, Toronto, Washington, Philadelphia and, of course, your Boston Celtics. Those are all the teams on the Jazz current four-game road trip.
Nelson’s report on Toronto went to good use as the Jazz beat them, 140-133, in triple OT.
Nelson, whose son Tyler, is one of the top high school basketball players in the state, will be a special guest of the Jazz during their pregame shoot-around today and he’ll be sitting behind the bench during the game tonight.
Hoops fix at NA Youth Center
If you can’t wait until the winter high school sports season to get your basketball fix, get over to the North Andover Youth Center beginning tonight when the Donovan Fall League playoffs begin.
This league is as good as it gets, barely a notch below the regularly scheduled games starting in December.
Tonight’s games are: 5:15 p.m., Andover vs. Bishop Fenwick; 6:25 p.m., Lawrence vs. Westford; 7:35 p.m., Salem vs. Methuen; and 8:45 p.m., Whittier vs. Pelham.
The winners of tonight’s games face off against St. John’s Prep, Central Catholic, North Andover and Medford, respectively, on Sunday night. The times of those games will be announced tomorrow.
Knights fans KO Concord-Carlisle
The North Andover High boys soccer team win, 3-1, over highly-ranked Concord-Carlisle on Tuesday night at Manning Bowl in Lynn was impressive.
But honestly, what was more impressive was the turnout of North Andover fans. The Knights outdid their counterparts by at least, 4 to 1, particularly in the student section.
The school is noted, particularly during the big boys and girls basketball games, for the “Crozier Crazies.” But their performance and participation was more impressive on Tuesday night, bating C-C players and fans into some weak counter-attack chatter.
Score this one a knockout for both the North Andover High team and, as impressive, its following.
Jimmy Vesey, Part 2
College hockey fans in the area remember this name, Jimmy Vesey. The former Merrimack College great led one of the great eras of hockey around here in the late 1980s.
Well, get ready to hear that name again. This time it’s his eldest son, Jimmy Vesey Jr.
The Harvard University freshman scored three goals this past weekend helping Harvard go 1-1-0 against two ECAC Hockey foes —- No. 7 Union and RPI. He scored a goal in a Friday night loss to Union, but needed a pair of unassisted goals in 4-zip win over RPI on Saturday night.
Among freshmen, Vesey Jr. ranks second in the nation in goals-per-game with a 1.0 average and first in the nation in points-per-game (1.40).
Ex-ET reporter writes for Boston Magazine blog
Talented former Eagle-Tribune sports reporter Alan Siegel, who moved to the Washington, D.C. area a few years ago, is still making his mark in the Greater Boston area.
The Lynnfield native and George Washington University grad has written a few interesting stories for Boston Magazine and currently is “blogging” for the magazine.
Siegel has an interesting Q&A with Drew Magary, a well-known writer for Deadspin, Gawker, and GQ. Magary is noted for his critique of Boston sports fans. It is a funny read at www.bostonmagazine.com. Go to “Boston Daily” to find the Siegel’s story.
