Farnham in NHL

North Andover’s Bobby Farnham is fighting for a job in the NHL, skating as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins this preseason.

Farnham spent last season with the Penguins’ AHL affiliate the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, notching 11 points in 65 games. The right wing signed an NHL deal with the Pens worth $550,000 in the offseason.

The former Phillips, Brooks and Brown University star’s preseason got off to a rough start when he hurt his ankle in Monday’s loss to Detroit. He is day-to-day.

Despite being just 5-foot-10 and 188 pounds, Farnham has a reputation as a tough guy, and you can see him drop the gloves on the website “hockeyfights.com.”

Andover honors late dad

Prior to last week’s matchup with BC High, Andover football dedicated the school’s weight room to the late Peter Stevens, father of current Golden Warrior tight end and defensive lineman Mitch Stevens.

Peter passed away last winter while helping a stranded motorist out of a snowbank. His wife, Deb, and a committee raised $10,000.

Before the game there was a ribbon-cutting, and the family was honored at the coin toss.

Hyman named captain

Another hockey star from North Andover, former Scarlet Knights standout Jack Hyman was named the captain for the Loyola Marymount club hockey team last week. In two years at the Los Angeles school, the 2010 Eagle-Tribune All-Star has 38 goals and 30 assists. Hyman, a junior, will be the lone player on the team to wear the captain’s “C.”

Betcha didn’t know

Most know that Andover resident and current Methuen High assistant football coach Derrick Beasley was drafted by the New England Patriots, in the fourth round of the 1987 NFL Draft. But check out who he was drafted ahead of.

Beasley was selected with the 102nd overall pick in the draft. Taken 11 spots later was wide receiver Cris Carter, who this year was induced into the NFL Hall of Fame. Picked four spots ahead of Beasley, also by the Patriots, was 2002 NFL MVP and three-time All-Pro Rich Gannon.
