Astros show off their 'long red line' in victory

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — NASHUA — Pinkerton’s “Long Red Line” ran like its name yesterday in an overwhelming victory in the Nashua Invitational.

Paced by an exceptional race by Phil Parent, the Astros compiled just 34 points to smoke runner-up Methuen (91) in the 11-team race. Londonderry (107) was third.

Despite being sick the last three days before the race, Parent was first in 16:24 over the 5K course, nipping Bedford standout Tristam Winship at the finish by one second. Sophomore Tom Hanlon was fourth in 16:54, Connor Kwiecien was seventh, Owen Clark came in ninth and the Astros took 13th and 14th as well.

Perhaps even more impressive, Pinkerton took the top eight places in the JV race, led by winner Nick Sevilla, who ran a 17:14.

”It was just a great performance for our guys,” said Pinkerton coach Mike Clark. “We’re really looking forward to next week (the Manchester Invitational).”

Methuen was paced by sophomore Jeff Reddy in eighth with a 17:05, while Londonderry was led by Grant McAuliffe in 17:02 in fifth. Joe Settineri came in 10th for Salem.

Sansing paces girls

Pinkerton sophomore Morgan Sansing ran a superb race to place first yesterday at the Nashua Invitational, coming in at 19:18, 12 seconds before Concord senior Smita Boesch-Dining.

Sansing’s classmate, Ariel Aillancourt, also was solid and came in third at 19:52 but, although soph Taylor Lacy came in 14th, the Astros didn’t have quite the depth to prevail as a team.

Bishop Guertin placed first with 49 points, scoring four runners in the top 10.

Like the boys, Pinkerton’s girls also dominated the JV race, putting seven in the top 12 led by Kaila Cote in first (20:54) and freshman Samantha Mangano in second.

For Londonderry, which was fifth in the varsity, Madison McKivergan came in 11th.
