WILSON EARNS WIN
Londonderry’s own Brian Wilson was the winning pitcher for the Dodgers in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Braves. With the win, LA advanced to the NLCS.
Wilson pitched three times in the series vs. Atlanta, combining for 3.0 scoreless innings and striking out four.
WHY WELKER IS BETTER
Eagle-Tribune sportswriter Hector Longo has a weekly section in his “Two Minute Drill” in which he praises coach Bill Belichick (the man who can do no wrong among Pats writers) called, “Why Belichick is Better.”
Longo should add this section ... “Why Welker is Better.”
Welker, the former Patriots receiver now with the Broncos, has seven TDs this year. Danny Amendola, the younger and faster version who the Patriots signed to replace Welker, has just seven TDs in 44 NFL games and none this year.
Welker also has as many TD catches this year as all the Patriots receivers combined.
WHAT A RETURN!
Needham football player Cliff Kurker had an amazing 71-yard punt return for a touchdown this past week. Check it out at YouTube.com (youtube.com/watch?v=YotUby9jDXM).
It was a great return but there also was plenty of poor tackling.
STILL IN GROOVE
Longtime Eagle-Tribune sportswriter Chuck Frye moved to Florida this summer but he’s still writing sports. He is a high school football correspondent for the Tampa Bay Times (tampabay.com).

NOT LONG AGO
The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will play today at 8:07 p.m. in the decisive Game 5 of the NLDS.
The Pirates will start 23-year-old rookie Gerrit Cole, who was the first overall pick in the 2011 draft and won Game 2 of the series.
Five months ago, Cole was in the minors and lost to the PawSox, 11-3, giving up eight earned runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings.
