Central Catholic wins Div. 1 Super Bowl

Drummond-Mayrie and Raiders save best for last

FOXBORO — Central Catholic’s last trip to Patriots Place came when it was a mere old cement facade of a stadium with aluminum benches and not much else.

On that day back in December of 1989, Central Catholic had no reason to celebrate. Yesterday in the Division 1 Super Bowl, the Raiders gave their fans in the crowd of about 5,000 plenty to scream about. The Raiders dominated Xaverian Brothers High of Westwood to win, 34-17, to stand alone at the top of the state.

In the most heroic of performances, it was Central’s inspirational leader and captain, D’Andre Drummond-Mayrie who delivered the game of his life, both offensively and defensively.

“What a performance, and it’s so fitting too,” said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos, who last led the Raiders to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998 but those were both held at Boston University. “D’Andre is such a great kid. As a student-athlete, he exemplifies all that we’re looking for.”

Drummond-Mayrie, who will attend the University of New Hampshire next year on a full football scholarship, scored three touchdowns on his first eight carries, helping Central build a 27-10 lead.

“You can’t ask for a more perfect ending to a season or a career,” said Drummond-Mayrie. “I’ve always wanted to get here, and I knew what I did. I wasn’t going to hold anything back.”

For Central, yesterday’s rewards were quite satisfying, especially for a senior class that had been so close but missed playoffs the past two seasons. Last year’s Thanksgiving defeat to Andover was especially painful.

But the Raiders left no doubt this year. They plowed through the Merrimack Valley Conference large division at 5-0 and qualified for the playoffs at 6-1. The Raiders’ North championship win at two-time defending state champion Everett goes down as one of the great upsets in state history.

And yesterday, behind Drummond-Mayrie, Cody Demers, a spirited senior class and the rest of the squad, they finished the job.
