The Eagle-Tribune Fall All-Stars kick off today (see pages C4, C5, C7) and the teams include three worthy MVPs.
In football, Methuen running back Mike Bartlett and Georgetown defensive back Joe Esposito led the way.
Bartlett had one of the greatest seasons running the ball in the history of the program. He scored 21 TDs and rushed for 1,291 yards as the Rangers were one of the most improved teams in the state.
In the 20-year history of the Eagle-Tribune MVPs, he's the third Ranger gridder to be honored, following Derrick Marsan (2002) and Joe Cerami (1992).
Marsan's brother, Justin, made the football All-Star team this year.
Esposito has put up eye-popping running and passing numbers, so his defensive handiwork was sometimes overlooked. But as a ballhawk and a hitter, the do-it-all 5-10, 175-pounder had few equals.
Despite playing for a small school, Espo couldn't be overlooked. He was a two-time All-Scholastic.
Leah Cairns was named our top field hockey player. The senior midfielder led Andover to its best season in at least 21 years and probably ever.
Cairns made history. Andover has a proud field hockey tradition but the perennial MVC champions have never had a player named Eagle-Tribune MVP.
The All-Stars will continue tomorrow with boys soccer.
